Haven't seen a thread on a 48 in a while...
I've always had a real fondness for the .22 WMR cartridge, and love my model 48-2 so much I got a 48-3 to go with it.
Now, if I can find a magnum kit gun to be a little brother for those two to take care of!
I'm going to take some pics and post them, but if you have a nice pic of your favorite 48 (or any other .22 mag for that matter, let's see 'em.

I only have one but it an accurate one.
It's a 6" if I came across an 8 3/8" I'd probably try to get it.
Provided the hole in my pocket gets fixed

OK for you. I never get tired of posting this very early M48-0 # K 368119 no XXX's, shipped 7-16-1959. Second month of production. I have one box of rare 1959 vintage Remington ammo for it too. Big Larry

That's a great find Big Larry. Beautiful gun. Here's a fairly late production Model 48-4 and it too is a very accurate gun. No so called "Bangor Punta issues" with this one.

Here is an original 1959 box of first production ammo in 22 magnum caliber. I have seen only two boxes of this ammo and one is for sale on Joe Salters site for $125 I think. It is not nearly as nice as this one. Big Larry

What do you experts think a M48 no dash with a 6" barrel all numbers matching in about 95% condition is worth? I came across an early one at a local gun show for $1,300 asking price.

For a lot of reasons that I've argued in previous posts, the .22 magnum has been my home defense round for a long time. The model 48 is one of my favorites. The pictures shows my 48 flanked by my K-22 and my 17-3.

I paid $650 for the one I pictured and it is a good 98%+ and 2nd month of production. I think $1,300 for a 95% 6 inch is a tad high. That's closer to what a 8 3/8" 4 screw would bring at around $900 to $1,000 and they are much scarcer. Big Larry

I was offered 850 for my 48-4 box and all. Turned it down. Wouldn't take that for my no dash either, not at all.

The 8 3/8ths inch barrel 48 is the one S&W that has successfully avoided my grasp!Never saw one in any gun store yet. I've been the second guy in line a couple times here on the forum.
The only .22WMR's I have are a 1970's vintage Colt Frontier Scout Buntline 7.5 inch and an early 1980's Ruger Single-Six 9.5 inch which is outstandingly accurate with WMR ammo. They need a Smith to play with!

Here is my Model 48 8 3/8" I purchased recently. No turn line I can see except maybe with a magnifying glass. I paid $650.00 in July. I have never owned a .22 Magnum of any type and actually was just able to find some ammunition at Walmart last Saturday. I think I will be shooting it soon? Brian

That's an unusual serial number! My no dash is lettered with shipping date 8/60 (K404xxx)
You got a deal. I learned to shoot a handgun when this one was new, it was my fathers. I inherited it in '75, sold it in '79 for chemo treatments for my late wife, and found it again (on this forum) 12/2012, and brought it home.

According to my Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson the serial number should be 1974. That is sad you had to sell your Model 48 but great you were able to purchase it back. I am looking forward to putting a few rounds through mine. Brian

There's a thread someplace else about "senior moments" and I had one , I mixed yours and big larrys posts up and didn't bother checking.
Yep, what are the odds of finding one that many years later, without a clue, and it had changed owners several times probably.
I will predict great satisfaction for you when you get your 48 to the range. Enjoy that

I have one Model 48-2, (marked MDL 48 no dash) a circa 1974 built gun with 8-3/8" barrel, and all the T's.
And....since the OP said to post any 22 magnum handguns, here's My model 651-2 as well.

I have three M48's. All no dash 4 screws One 6" and two 8"ers. 1959, 1960, and 1961. 1961 rather late for a no dash, but it still has the correct first model ejector rod. Left or right hand, I cannot ever get this straight. Big Larry

Love the .22 Magnum...and most guns that fire it....
Found this one about two years ago...also has the Long Rifle cylinder...shoots like a rifle...
A 51 that I picked up last year from the estate of a friend...it is in 95% condition...a friend got the other one that was in 99% condition...both guns now have the extra LR cylinder...
An interesting 70s vintage 4" 48...has both cylinders but the previous owner installed a 50s vintage hammer and an 80s vintage Combat wide trigger... When I bought it the LR cylinder showed no evidence of ever being fired... Came with a set of Combats that really didn't fit my hand well...these Diamond Walnuts came from the kindness of another forum member...
Model 63 with a 651 extra cylinder...a great trail gun... Wish I knew who did the sights..
Bob

I picked up a model 48 four screw with an 8-3/8" barrel a few years ago in a two gun deal. Promptly sold the other gun and kept the model 48. Someone left it in a sad looking holster and the cylinder was rusted half way around the exterior. Had the cylinder refinished and it is an excellent shooter. Groundhogs don't stand a chance at 50 yards. Winchester 40 grain hollow points are what the old girl likes!!

I think this thread should have been in the pre 1961 thread, but here goes.
Two 8 3/8 " M48 no dash 4 screws. The top gun, # K 397770, no XXX's,bought from a member here, was shipped as a 6" K-38 3-1960 according to Mr. Jinks. He double checked, and yes, shipped as a K38. I guess someone made a recording error. The bottom gun, also bought from a member here, is # K 419610, also no XXX's, shipped 6-1961. Both guns are 48 no dashes, although maybe supposed to be dash 1's,they still have the right hand threaded ejector rods of the no dash. Big Larry

Here too is an original box for a 1959 vintage K22 Magnum. Notice it is a K22 box with white print 22 MRF. Big Larry

No, I have a factory trained gunsmith about 40 miles from me so whenever a S&W issue comes up it goes right to him.

recently walked into my favorite LGS and owner was standing there polishing a Model 48 no dash. Asked how much and bought it for 350.00. serial k368178 which makes it a 1959 production. It is about 95% and shoots very well and has original grips. Also bought a 14-3 from same lgs recently for 350.00 also. this on is 1972 production. Deals are stiil there if you wait and do not give in to the high prices.

Happy Me! Model 48 8 3/8 found at last!
After looking for a couple of years I finally found a Model 48,K-22 Masterpiece .22 M.R.F, 8 3/8", box,tools, and papers!
Sn. 5K91xxx P&R in good shape. Anyone have an idea when it was made?
Now my 8 3/8", 14,17 and 57 have a new "member" to the group.
Hope to get out to the range and give her a dance soon.

The first handgun I ever bought when I was 21 was a 6" 48-4, still have it. Still shoot it
A Sweet 4" that by serial number should be a dash 3 but is just marked 48 no dash.

Gelnncal1 may have just answered a question for me, the 48 I just bought is stamped 48 but the box is marked 48-2. Is this common?
