Did a 5 inch Highway Patrolman ever exist?
A guy I know said that the Highway Patrolman his dad just sold was a "rare" 5" version.
I'm not familiar with a 5" Highway Patrolman.
Can you fine gents shed some light on this?

The SCSW says 25 guns were made in 5" with a nickel finish for the Florida HP in 1959.

Pretty sure this guy said his dad's was blue.
I'm thinking either it was actually a 27, or if it was originally nickel, it had been refinished.

It could also be one with the barrel cut down to 5 inches.

I saw a 5" highway patrolman once. He was Broderick Crawford, on a very small black and white TV screen.

Usually the explanation for a revolver claimed to have a rare barrel length one inch shorter than standard is someone measured from the muzzle to the front of the frame. That leaves out the inch screwed into the frame.

No blued 5" 28's were ever known to have been built by the factory. Here are a couple of one of the 25 original model 28 nickel guns. I was sent these pics by the owner several years ago to post for him here. The gun in this condition and with the original box is estimated to be worth well north of $10K-

Read in SCSW-3 that there were fewer than 100 HP's made in 8 3/8in barrel length.

The guy said that it is blue.
Also, he said that Smith never made any nickel Hwy Patrolman revolvers.
I asked him if they measured the barrel from the front of the frame or from the face of the cylinder.
He didn't know.
I'm thinking it was cut down, or they measured it from the front of the frame.

If there's one thing I've learned from my time here is that when it comes to S&W variations , NEVER say "they never made it"!

Send him a link to this thread and the pics I posted. That gun has been authenticated more than once as being part of the 25 nickel guns shipped to the FHP.

Very neat Fla. HP revolver. Don't you wish that we could go back to a time when you could order just what you wanted from a regular production factory and they would do either one or a very small batch?

Going back in time....trading a kidney....$10k ...?
Might be easier to have a 6" Model 28 cut down and nickeled for around $1000.00 and you can shoot it all day without worry.

Or, just find a 5" M27 and have it Nickeled, or enjoy it as-is. P.S. I have mine (5" blued 27 that is).
