I am just trying to get a general idea how much having a name on the side plate of a fully engraved gun affects the value? The name is very well done and in 24kt gold lettering.

Sounds like it could be a presentation firearm. If a famous person with documentation up's the value, if just average Joe will probably decrease value. It would still depend how much a individual wants that model if rare someone might overlook the name.

I agree with other posters and that is if it's someone famous or even someone national or local person that received as a retirement gift like retired military top brass or police chief it might have some added value. If it's just someone's name or social security number it detracts from the value. People did actually put social security numbers on things of value before identity theft got big.

I own a beautiful 27-2 with 3.5 inch barrel that has a name engraved under the grips so it would never sell for what one without the name would.

Post a few photos so that we can see. Most custom engraved guns started off as something personal. The more I collect, the more I enjoy finding guns that were personalized - in many ways. As of late, I have started personalizing some of my less pristine guns and I have grown quite fond of several of them - as a result, they get a steady diet of lead, while the others spend most of their time in the dark recesses of my safe...

BUT - a name on a gun WILL affect the value - one way or another.;)

How much for ferralmerril`s 27-2 5"? I wonder but really dont want to know. It was done by the factory a little more than 40 years ago, seems to me it cost $66s.

For me it would change it from a collector to a shooter. In value terms based on personal preference re condition of my shooters, that would reduce the value by about 40-50%. IMHO.

On mine its my hope that my daughter will keep it in the family. I dont have any blood sons or grand sons but hopefully one of my grand daughters may have a son. Maybe I should have smith fit up another sideplate just in case my wife needs to sell it to eat after I am gone? Wonder if they could do that?

Hell, if I had the money I'd pay top dollar for a genuine feralmerril! Those famous-owner guns don't come along every day! :D

Anyway, that's a fine-looking 27.

ONLY "IF" the name is of a "somebody" can their 'notoriaty'(sic) add or maybe subtract from an "extra" value, otherwise it is ONLY of "value" to the family and it's 'heirs'.........as noted above, a shooter............
the name pictured appears to be of some 'stock broker'???:0
