Default Reverse 3 ampersand?

I have a model 19-3 with a "&" between Smith and Wesson on the left hand side of the barrel that very much resembles a backwards 3 that I find curious. I have seen it on only one other gun. Can someone here tell me about the different usage between this and the traditional ampersand?

I can't address the history of this mark on S&W's, but I can tell you that this was the original form of the ampersand, being a sort of shorthand rendering of the Latin "et" meaning "and". I personally have never seen one like this on a S&W.

Hope this helps
Larry

Yep. They're out there. Usually on Model 19-3s.

Ampersands Used on N-frame Revolvers, Part I - Smith & Wesson Forum

I do not see what the discussion regarding N frame ampersands
have to do with the reverse 'E' ampersand we are discussing here.

It appears to have only appeared on the model 19-3 2.5" , the model 66 2.5" ,
and the model 17-3 that I have shown in my thread.

Regards
Allen

I think the commentary explains that the ampersand/ampersands are not standard---they vary.

Just like what I like to call the "8c" ampersand from the early '70's, it just happened to be the ampersand the person who made the rollstamp used and when that stamp wore out, it wasn't used anymore.

Seems to be seen more on 2.5" M19's and M66's but it is also on a lot of 4" and 6" Model 19's and 66's from late 1975, early 1976.
Usually only look at Combat Magnums but besides the M17 above, I have also seen it on Model 10's.

I wouldn't mind hearing what serial number ranges it appears on K-frames other than Models 19 & 66.
Has anyone seen one anything other than a K-frame?

They show up on RB 19/66's in the 6K ε 8K's, and SB's in the 7K~early 9K's but of course not every 6K~9K has that ampersand...

This is on my 64-1 4" HB serial #1D21xx.

I have never seen one like this either.

It is on the left side of the barrel.

On the right side of the barrel it is imprinted

38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG. and on this side it has a normal

ampersand.
