The S&W 8 3/8" Appreciation Thread!
Upon acquiring an 8 3/8" model 57 last week, I completed a set of nearly every 8 3/8" S&W magnum (except the 8 3/8" .22 Jet) and a .22 for practice. I thought I'd share some pics here since most fit here. Show your 8 3/8" barrel!
Model 17-3 .22 LR (1977)
S series Model 27-2 .357 Mag full target (1965)
Model 27-3 .357 Mag (1986)
Model 57 no dash .41 Mag (1980)
Model 29-4 .44 Mag (1987)
Model 460 .460 Mag (2007)
Model 500 .500 Mag (2003)

Model 53 presented to General Curtis Le May in June 1961. Read its complete story in my expert commentary, The Persona Non Grata Club. Second photo is a Model 29 shipped in April 1959. Third is one of the first ".357" Magnums with an 8 3/8-inch barrel and target stocks (post-WW II) shipped in December 1952.

I've had 3 in this length, still have one. Got it in 2008 off Gunbroker for $321. Came in unfired condition with everything including the cardboard wrapper. (Other two were 48-3 and a 29-2.)

29-1
Picture taken when I acquired it years ago-stocks have since been replaced with period correct examples. Bought it thinking I might be able to trade it for the 6 1/2" version--so far no luck, so here it sits. Only other long tube I currently own is a Pre 27 shooter--had a really nice 29 no dash in nickel, but I sold it to a forum member a few years back--maybe he'll post pictures of it.

This one was my first S&W, purchased new back in the Dirty Harry days.
Used it first as a Arizona desert walking around gun, later for silhouette shooting and deer hunting.
I installed the patridge front sight. Much better for target work.
The silhouette work took its toll and the gun went back to S&W for a total rebuild:
The 17-4 came along during the silhouette days as another competition gun.
Could really slam those little rams back when I could actually see them:
This one in the case at the time I purchased the 117, so why not a twofer:
Always wanted a 629. This no-dash one came along cheap as it was pretty scuffed up, but cleaned up nice:
This is the most recent 8-3/8 incher.
Amazing that, with the current pocket gun mania, that these are relative bargains.
As a project of sorts, I found and refinished presentation stocks for each of them.

Here's an earlier thread on the topic: The Long-Barreled Smith & Wesson Thread
From right to left with 8-3/8 barrels:
M-17-4 .22LR
M-48-4 .22WMR
M-53-2 .22 Jet
M-14-4 .38 Special
M-27-2 .357 Magnum
M-29-3 .44 Magnum
M-25-9 .45 Colt
M-57-1 .41 Magnum (with scope)
M-29-3 Silhouette 10-1/2”
Dan Wesson Model 15 with 15” barrel
I found out a while back that the Smith & Wesson M-15 was also available with an 8-3/8 barrel but this forum is the only place I’ve ever seen one.

Truthfully,
I have never been a fan of the 8 3/8" barrels, so I only have one, and that was bought with the intention of having it cut down to a 5" barrel. This is an S prefix gun shipped in July '69, but it has a slightly later barrel on it. I have no idea what length the gun actually shipped with and it isn't worth lettering to find out. I may just keep it as is though, because it is a good shooter.

My first Long Tom S&W was the 617 no dash I purchased new back in 1990, shown here with a more recently acquired 686-1M.
Best looking revolver ever-the M 27-2!

My pre 27 that gets used on occasion.
Had a 15-5 that I sold to someone here. Probably shouldn't have. Also a 48-4 and a 14-4 that was the first S&W I ever owned and still have.

48-3 made in 1977
5 screw Pre-29 made in 1956. Originally shipped with a 6.5" barrel then sent back to factory and fitted with 8 3/8" barrel and put in this rare transition presentation box.
Single Shot 2nd model shipped in 1909. This one is actually 3/8" short!
