Gun rack in safe?
Need more efficient storage in safe. Pistols are currently stored on their side on a carpeted shelf... I'm thinking a padded rack, just a rod into the muzzle. Any such out there?

Yes. I'll look it up and send you a link shortly. It's basically a rack that holds 6 guns, 3 on bottom 3 on top with the coat hanger type wire down the barrel. There's another option I've seen, too. It's a block with gun shaped cubby holes cut into it and carpeted, with the gun vertical, grip facing out. I know I've seen one of the two in the NRA store online, so I'll start my digging

I typed in "handgun rack for safe" in Google, and found a whole bunch of products that fit your description. They all appeared between $20 and $50, so you should find what you're looking for

How about this:

Not only do they use space efficiently but they also protect the Guns from nicks and dents moving the Guns in and out.All cases are marked with tags identifying the Gun inside.

They are all coated in Renaissance wax and the safe is both temperature and humidity controlled.I have never had a problem and I take them out frequently to fondle and shoot them.

I bought some plastic coated wire racks for pot lids at Walmart and they work well and were cheap. Can be used as is for automatics laid in slide down. Tie wrapped a plastic tube at the rear of one of the racks for longer barreled revolvers and they set butt down in the rack.

I have been considering a new storage method as well,
Im currenty using the padded cases but seems a wood plank with
staggered horizontaly aligned dowels for the bores will be more efficient,
Dont want metal to metal contact as Im afraid of corrosion ,
Cant really see a way around metal rods for small bore guns , may have to cover them in heat shrink plastic.

I've had good luck heat shrinking wires... thanks for the idea. Still thinking... (and you thought that smell was an old tire burning)

Safe is in the house so the temperature and humidity are reasonable. I have been keeping mine in cases like that with no problems.

Gun rack in safe?
Manabout Racks - highly recommended
I have several of these to store my pistols/revolvers in. Custom and scaleable to your needs and safe size.
I have guns ranging from 2" J frames to 5" 4506 stored in these. Works very effectively.
I discovered these on this site some time back - there should be some older threads about them.
(These pictures are from the testimonial section of site)

I store mine in those cases ("pistol rugs") in my safe.
Never had a single rust problem.

obviously, the solution to my problem or should I say challenge, since I don't really consider having a lot of guns a problem, is to get a second or larger safe.
well, that aint gonna happen! So I have to make do with what I got for now.
Currently I store my auto pistols in their case w/ mags, and my revolvers in gun rugs. I am almost at max capacity and think that I will be able to fit two maybe three more revolvers inside my safe.
If I add one or two shelves, then put all my guns in rugs, I think that will free up some space. I have to do something, I cant stop buying guns

I made my handgun rack with rods to hold the guns, but dipped the rods into the liquid plastic that you put on tool handles. Makes a nice soft surface in the barrel, and when dried are pretty impervious to various chemicals like gun cleaning chemicals.

I have 3 safes. Browning gun safe for cartridge long guns, BP guns, a 4' tall class B commercial fire safe for cartridge pistols, an almost 4' tall class B commercial safe (for documents). Cannons do not fit in a safe.

That is the set up that I have used for a long while now. It keeps your pistols safe and you can still easily find what you are looking for.

I like this one: Versatile Gun Rack...available in 4, 6, or 8 spaces. Works great and is inexpensive. Heavy coating prevents metal-to-metal contact. Available at MidwayUSA.

These are what I use, along with gun socks to keep the guns from getting bumps and bruises.

In my Eyes the Gun must have some sort of gun rug, bore store, gun sock, etc so that the Gun's don't get all banged up.

Has anyone had issues with storing their handguns in gun cases in the safe. I really like the idea and would love to hear more success or horror stories! Thanks,

I would like to hear more examples too. Especially those that live in high humidity areas. I thought that the high humidity might cause them to "sweat" in the gun rugs without available air circulation.
I do like the idea and the fact that they are protected from each other in the safe.

I use cardboard boxes with slip on tops, plus gun wrap paper inside. Can't remember box makers name right now. Label goes on end for easy ID. Extra grips, screws, etc can stay with gun.
I would never store a firearm in a foam line case for any period of time. Learned the hard way that foam sucks the oil out and can leave marks on bluing. Soft fabric cases are better but I still worry about their ability to retain moisture.
Those modular racks look great for pistols that get regular use.
I like the custom drawers a LOT! Don't have woodworking skills to build them though.

I have not had issues but on Gun Broker I have seen descriptions of two S&W revolvers with rust, pitting, or other significant changes to the bluing with the seller describing the changes occurring because the gun had been stored in a gun rug for a prolonged period of time and since then I've been nervous about prolonged storage in a gun rug. I also agree with another post expressing concern about prolonged storage in a foam lined storage case. On the other hand my dad stores his guns "naked" in gun rugs or soft rifle cases and has not had any problems in 50+ years.
The advantage of a gun rug is that if anything upsets the firearms (shelf failure, earthquake, sasquatch) you don't have to worry about your guns scratching each other as they jostle about or fall.
Regarding storage in a high humidity area I like the idea of placing a waxed or lightly oiled gun in a gun sock or wrapping in a clean old discarded cotton clothing item (t-shirt), placing it in a zip-lock bag (get all the air out), and then place it inside a gun rug.

The vault has changed a bit, but there are still Thompsons and Monitors tucked away! I love walking around back there whenever I get back to Q-Town.

Look on Amazon and look for the black wire hangers. I used the over and unders and a dozen single gun "kik stands" I can bend the wire that goes into the muzzle up or down to perfectly hold a snub or an 8 3/8" barrel if your safe is deep enough. Don't hang they like they do in the gun shop cases on a slant. Bend the wire up so they stand straight up and down.
I also use the six position racks where they fit.
I use two "pro-rods' for taking photographs. They are not of any use inside the safe. I have a dozen guns in boxes. Right now I have 60 guns in my safe. The one other option is a door mounted hanger. Plan on a $100 for that. I need another safe or thin out the herd.
Good luck to you.

I put my handguns on baking sheets and slide the baking sheets onto the shelves in my safe. Each shelf will hold two baking sheets. I can get as many as nine guns on a sheet. I cover the bottom of the baking sheets with drawer liner.

How does the same rack work for different length barrels? I'm worried mostly about 8.375" barrels

Those are pictures of the gun vault at the FBI HQ at Quantico back in the "good old days."
I hope you and your family are all well.
