Which to buy? 3 inch blue 27 or 6 inch nickel 19-4
I'm looking at a few old smiths at my local gunshow this weekend and got a few of the vendors with smiths interested in a trade on a modded glock. And these are the two that caught my eye the most.
A 80-85 ish % 3 inch blue model 27 with slim smooth grips
And
A 6 inch 19-4 in with nickel in very very good condition with original stocks More like 95 ish
Little difference in price but both vendors mentioned coming off that for cash and they're both into my trade.
Which one would you rather have?

They're asking 900 for the 27
700 for the 19
I've had a few k frames. And love em. Only have a 19 snub now. Miss my 3 inch 65-5 that got stolen. I've owned a 4 inch 29-2 and also have the fever for large revolvers as well as carry sized "target" guns lol
The 27 is the totally in between gun of all that I believe. Large frame compact length but the thing is bulky and weighty. And I don't know if it will fulfill my search to replace my old 3 inch bull barrel k frame.
I think I like the feel of that 6 inch nickel 19 better as a "target/fun" gun. Mainly bc I like the k frame size bc I'm used to it.
For ppl who have owned snub N frames how does it feel to carry that thing around?

There is nothing more fun to shoot and carry than a 3.5 inch model 27...Great Balance...Deadly Accurate, and Carries just fine...But Im 6'2 325 so those little J & K frames just annoy me...
If its truly a 80% gun and a 27-2 or a Newer N Serial 27...900 is a little high...

They're different enough that intended use -- which hasn't been indicated -- is what this should come down to.
That said, I think a 3.5" 27 is a more interesting and versatile revolver than a 6" anything, much as I love Model 19 in general.
Model 27 it is.

I've got both and there is no doubt in my mind. The 27 would win.

AT those prices, let him keep them both.
They are both very overpriced for condition you are giving.
They are low grade shooters.
I have a 4 inch 19 ANIB... what would he want for that? 1500?
The 27 in 85% I think you said. 500 bucks tops. A low grade shooter would describe the 27 good at the percentage you gave. The 4 inch 27 is actually a "rarer" barrel length, and the 19 in 6 inch is not as desirable as a 4 inch... certainly not valued that high.
I would advise you to keep what you have and let him do the same.
If you take your time you can find both those guns right here, nicer, and for less money.
All that said, I would rather have a 27 than 19.

OP states that those are the opening asks and that both sellers have said they'll go lower.
If the 27 is an 85% finish-wise but in spec and fresh mechanically, while I do think $900 is the seller's "wish" price, $500 would be a buyer's "uber-wish" price in the current market.
Out of curiosity, how is you rate a describe 95% Model 19 as a "low grade shooter"?

Pictures would help but I would certainly be biased towards the 3.5" model 27.

I agree that the cost is high on both. Prohibitive in my opinion.
I don't know where in Louisiana you are shopping, but there is a dealer out of Baton Rouge (message me if you want to know who it is) that shows up routinely at gun shows and asks hundreds more than most informed buyers would pay. IMHO.
I was at a gun show a couple of years ago and looked at a 98% or 99% 19-3 they had in their showcase. When I asked about the $900 price tag being correct she confirmed it. Judging by the look in the salesgirls eyes I must have looked like I'd been shot. I repeated to her "$900 ? Are you sure". Her eyes went flat and she asked if I was at all familiar with S&W revolvers and assured me she could easily sell it at that price. I thanked her and walked away.
Good luck.

I walked in today and they had sold the 19 but they had a stainless 686 asking 600. I was pretty interested in it but I started talking business on the 27 and they went for it. Glock with extras plus 100 bucks.
@beautienne: yes it probably was the vendor you are talking about. Based out of Baton Rouge. And yes everything is high. But in my town EVErYtHIng is sky HIGH. I'm happy with it.
Kinda itching for the 6 inch stainless or nickel because if want to get a longer prettier smith sometime lol. But no biggie I'm pleased

I I had had more cash on me or another one of my pistols I might would trade with me I prob would have walked out with a stainless 686 also

I think you made a pretty good trade. Other than the non-S&W grips, the gun looks to be in great shape.

No question, the 19-4 for me, especially given the difference in condition. I've already got blued 19s in each barrel length, and nickel 4" and 6" guns, preferably 19-4s, are next on my list.

This is kinda how I felt bc I've had a 19-3 in a 4 inch blue and I still have a 2.5 blue 19-3. So I was leaning towards some diversity with a stainless or a nickel 6 inch gun. Really liked the 686 and the 19-4. I'm still torn between k frames and n/L frame though. Gotta have both Eventually I guess lol

In pictures looks better than 80-85%; how're the mechanics?
Appears a good trade -- Glocks are easily replaced, quality old S&W wheelies are not.

I'm no appraiser. It is definately not bad at all. Turn line. Very slight scuffs on the front face of the barrel and one little pitted spot on the cylinder. Locks up very tight. Trigger feels heavy but smooth. None of my guns are "safe queens" but this is probably the nicest "old" gun I have. It wasn't a safe queen but it wasn't thrown around either.

Glad you got the 27...my favorite revolver in .357 magnum (and that includes the over-hyped and over-priced Python).

I should have only called the 27 a low grade shooter. When I wrote that I thought he had called them both 85.
Sorry but over 500 for that 27 is nuts. 900? Insane. I have them 100% in box. Should I assume they are worth oh......... 3 times a 80 per center with nothing? 2700? Wanna buy a few of mine?
EDIT: I see the guy took the Glock in trade, plus 100 bucks and "extras"
Glock at 500
100
600 total when he sells. Thats on the outside. Non one pays for mods.
So the guy basically took 600 for the gun. STILL got too much IMHO.
And the other guy from LA who knows the seller.
To each his own.
Write me when you wanna buy your next gun. I have a great deal waitin!
Where are these guys when *IM* sellin???

Nice pick-up. And good call passing on the 19. Cleaning .22 lead off of nickel is a pain.

Stainless or nickel prettier than a blue Model 27? You better get to an Opthalmologist, fast!

CDROBERTS,
I haven't seen a 3.5" Model 27-2 for $500 in so long I can't remember how many years ago it must have been. And certainly not one in the condition the OP's pictures show. I don't know what planet you live on but it's not where any of the gun shops or shows I've been to are located.

Something I read on here when I first joined is that you ought to figure out what part of the vast S&W output really interests you most, and concentrate your collecting on that. I knew it was K-frames, because they fit my hands best and I enjoy shooting them the most. I've got a 27, but I've bought mostly 19s and K-22s. Time to start working on nickel.

I agree that the price was high. Everything is high. I can't even buy 22lr ammo locally. Everyone wants everything for nothing. And wants to sell nothing for everything.
But I do not think I got a bad deal. And it doesn't really matter if you think I got a bad deal. Because it was my deal. And he actually did pay me for the mods. It was a multi caliber glock 26 with night sights and crimson trace grips. Few 9 mags few 40. He gave me 700 trade value for the glock. And to be honest for a vendor with like ten glass cases of high end pistols; they were all a little too giddy about the tacticool laser light and the stainless lone wolf barrel. Lol. They were just as happy as me.
And @ ma duece: I'm with you on that. I love the perfect fit of the k frames. Feel like toys. Lol They are my first love with handguns. But Also have love for my 29-2 and my "new" 27
