Default K22 .224 Harvey Kay-Chuk

Hello to All,

Could you help me identify, date and evaluate this pistol? It has Mod-17 on the frame you can see when you swing out the cylinder. Serial number is K375845.

On the barrel as you can see rolled upside down above the .22 Long Rifle mark it says ".224 Harvey Kay-Chuk Std" From what I have read in the S&W Catalog, it appears to be extremely rare to the tune of only 300 made.

Is that possible?

It appears mint condition to me but I'm sure there is a numerical percentage you can put to it. Also came with Gray non-original box.

Thanks for your expert opinions?

The Harvey Kay-Chuck revolvers were after-market conversions of the S&W K-22. Since that one has the (R) after the name I would think it was one converted by Jim Harvey, originator of the cartridge and conversion. The cartridge is basically a shortened version of the K-Hornet wildcat designed in the 1930s by Lyle Kilborne as a varmint cartridge. The K-Hornet was shortened to the Kay-Chuck because the longer cartridge was too long for the revolver cylinder.

I have seen the 300 figure mentioned before, although whether his is in some way documented or is just the number of conversions done by Jim Harvey himself I have no idea.

I am confused. I thought Harvey and then Bennett Guns were the only ones to make the Kay-Chuk conversion. You say you have an actual S&W catalog that listed this specific model? There is quite a bit of info on this forum and on the internet as a whole about the Harvey 224 Kay-Chuk. Somehow I have missed hearing anything about any coming out of the S&W factory. It is a great wildcat cartridge and fairly easy to make with the proper dies. It is based on the 22 Hornet cartridge. Many say that this wildcat and conversion efforts by Bennett Guns was the inspiration for S&W to design and produce the Model 53 in 22 Jet. ............ Big Cholla

An aside: The roll mark on your barrel is exactly how Bennett roll marked their barrels. Note the original ".22 Long Rifle" roll mark from S&W below it. ....

Thumbs up

Very nice looking gun.
Like the high polish, red ramp, chambering and being a 4 screw too.

I don't know anything about the factory making any but did find this
which may be of interest to you.
It seems to say the factory "may" have made 30 ?
Looks like 30 In the S&W Catalog to me

Wink

IIRC, the "STD" means only a shortened Hornet case, not a blown-out "K" case. The only answer to your question is a letter.
Good luck!
