Model 18-2 with unusual .500 wide smooth Trigger
Hi- I just acquired this 18-2. It has holster bluing loss on the barrel, front of trigger guard and the ejector rod. And the side plate has some tiny blems.
Check out the trigger- it's .500" smooth. The SCSW indicates that it should be a .400" trigger. Could this be a special order gun? Or? It also has a white outline rear sight which is not stock.
Thanks for any comments.

I LIKE it! Chances are a previous owner acquired a .500 target trigger and polished off the serrations. That looks like a sweet shooter!

I could be mistaken but that looks like a .375 smooth combat color case hardened trigger, one of my favorites. I've never seen one .500

I think you should edit your title a bit to get some more attention to the trigger aspect.
IIRC only a few N frame ones .500 have been seen.
I have a .400 case hardened smooth one on this oddball K22
but definately not a .500
Hope it turns out to be extremely rare for you

I think the trigger looks great. I'm a little envious because with all the S&W revolvers I have, only one (Model 29) has a wide target trigger.
The uniform color of the trigger in the picture doesn't look like the finish that I've seen on case hardened triggers and hammers. Maybe just the photo.
Still a great looking trigger.

I saw one of those triggers about 30 years ago on a model 14 that a fellow at work had. He bought it new so S&W did offer that style of trigger.

I have 2 of these on S&W Model 53's, after market.
they were offered in late 70's and early 80's. Might still be available today, have to check with S&W. Also have 1 on S&W Model 629, and a 657 Classic Hunter, but they are case hardened and then nickel plated to look stainless. I think they are more comfortable than the serrated ones. I would say the trigger and the sight were both after market on the 18. I have an 18 with WO Rear, Target Trigger, and Target Stocks, the trigger is not smooth.

Here's proof that S&W did ship 18s with TH and TT with standard stocks.

I really like it . It`s just perfect to toss around and have lots of fun with and no need to worry about another scratch or two. It is nice enough to be proud of and ratty enough to use and enjoy. I wish I had a few like it, because those pristine safe queens are too pretty to damage, so they don`t get used enough.

I think I will request a history letter from Mr. Jinks just to know if the .500 trigger, etc, is factory or after market.

I question the existence of any after market trigger for a S&W. You have the box and it appears to be marked properly. Factory replacement trigger maybe but I doubt spending $50 for a letter will provide any new information.

This ad is from a Gil Hebard Guns catalog from 1982. It shows that target triggers and hammers were available for the 18.

And this is from a S&W 1971 catalog. Note is says that the target triggers are a full 1/2 inch- but on page 10 of the catalog, is says the target triggers are grooved.

There are a few original (S&W made) 0.500-inch wide, smooth triggers that have been reported from time to time. I had a 19-2 with one (K700000 range). Also, the first 100 Model 629s were shipped with a 0.500-inch wide, smooth, trigger.

Looks like a target hammer too. My guess is aftermarket. In the '80s I bought a set for my M-28 and the hammer and trigger went right in, no sweat. That said, it certainly might have come that way from the factory, though I doubt it.
Great gun either way. Enjoy it.

For a period in the 80's you could buy in blister packs any number of S&W parts over the counter. This was discontinued after only a couple years.

smooth trigger
I am sure S&W shipped revolvers at times with this trigger. In my earlier post I called the trigger after market, but should have stated that I ordered the smooth target triggers from S&W parts. They also marketed a smooth combat trigger at the time that was narrower than the target. I could be mistaken, but I think the smooth combat triggers today are narrower, as I have one on a very early 686. I am sure nothing is impossible with S&W, they are and always have been a great company and I think they're revolvers are the finest in the world.

Probably was serrated at one time and smoothed due to the lack of case coloring on the trigger face .
Took me about 30 minutes to do the OEM .500 TT on my grade 15-2 using a vise and dremel,
The wide TT/TH was a popular upgrade or option before the smooth combat trigger with semi target hammer came into vogue.
This 18-4 came with the .500 TT/TH combo where the 17-5 has the Smooth combat trigger semi target hammer.

My 18-3, purchased used, came w/serrated TT, TH & magna grips. I was not sure, before now, if they came that way.
