S&W Model 36 Refinished...value
Hello S&W Folk,
I own a S&W Model 36 that I purchased used/un-fired and carried in my boot for years Serial#:1J3311??
It got quite worn so I sent it to 7.62 Precision in Alaska to be refinished. I am looking to use it as trade bait for a S&W Model 19 2 1/2 inch (blue) and was told yesterday that I ruined it's value with the OD/Black two-tone. I have not carried it since the refinish and would appreciate your input on it.
Thanks,
Mike...

You certainly didn't "ruin it," especially if you carried it and fired it only occasionally, but you have compromised its value quite a bit. It clearly has little value to a collector, but it still has value to someone who wants a nice carry piece. Value will vary around the country, but I suspect $300or so would be a fair price.

Who told you it was ruined, the guy buying it from you? That's a nice carry gun just right for a jacket pocket on the trail. 36's like yours are not rare and don't have a lot of collector value. They are however, great carry guns and yours looks neat. For $300 I would keep it.

It is not a collector piece period so don't worry about it. To me the fresh makeover and a correct mechanical function would be appealing if I were looking for 36. What is the finish? Anything with S&W on the side and no lock is minimum of $500 in my neck of the woods.

Looks good but I think a lot of people would be a bit weary of a refinish like that ........if I knew you.... could find you where you live (LOL).... and the guns history......$300-350 around here.
I'd just keep it......I expect..... it's worth more to you than you will get for it in trade..... or sale!

What they is trying to say is the money spent on refinish did not enhance the value, it might in fact have hurt the value.
You would have probably been better off not to refinish.

I think you started with a shooter grade 36 and ended up with a shooter grade 36.
The refinish might appeal to the right buyer, but in the end you have a 400-500 revolver.
Just my opinion, of course.

As to resale value, it is probably worth the same as it was when it was "finish challenged".
But as far as looks go, I like it.

I'd take it. It looks better than the one in my pocket right now.

I don't consider them any "grail" gun to begin with, and would rather have the cool refinish than a beat up pitted blued one. $425 IMO.

Well I like the looks of it. It is a all business carry piece that should withstand the elements well.
As said it's desirability is dependent on individual tastes. I have a couple of snubbies I carry on the ranch...one is a 5 shot 38, the other is a Taurus 8 shot 22 magnum. With Spring just around the corner my snubbies see a lot of use outdoors. Your gun would fit in well for my purposes.

You "consciously uncoupled" it from its original finish. I like it!

I agree with all of the above statements. I like it, it has no collector value but is functional and practical. If you don't need the cash for the Model 19, I would just keep it and continue to use and enjoy it.

If anyone can find a VG+ shooter 36 for < $300, buy it asap.
That's a nifty CCW. $400 - 450, no questions asked if in my LGS' used case.

Picked up a nice and tight 36 flat latch RB diamond grips today 10 hours ago for $315 with holster.
Would have been $300 or less if not flat latch.
So why do you guys buy guns in the LGS?
Never figured that one out.

Why would a refinish hurt the value--it won't in most parts of Texas.
Trade in would be 300/350----buy it from an individual for 500.

In this part of Texas, on a FTF sale, with good mechanics that is a $400 -$500 gun. There is a time refinish and a time not to. IMHO sometimes even a Smith needs a makeover.

To my point above #5.....
I think a lot of people who know S&Ws would ,no offense OP, wonder what else "bubba" has done.........what's the coat of paint covering up.........
I might take a chance on OP's if I had a chance to give it a good going over and knew the OP..... but still wouldn't put big $s into it.
No problem with the coatings themselves..... I've had 2 alloy frames with a lot of wear Cerecoated (sp?) .... but they are 2 guns I don't plan to sell .....both have +20 years of carry ( Smith 6904 (police trade) and a Berretta 92 M single stack)..... both are now reverse two tone guns.
OP you know the gun,you have a long history...it's a "look" you chose /like.. if you can afford it...IMHO Keep it
