Why is my 1976 Mod 60 considered a 2" barrel?
The web says it, my original manual says it, but when I measure the damn thing it's clearly 1.875"! From the tip all the way to the cylinder, no?

The barrels are 1.875", but 2" is easier to type online and in books .

Traditionally, it was called a 1 7/8" barrel. These days, revolvers with that barrel length are listed as having 1.875" barrels.
Small Frame (J) - Smith & Wesson
P.S.- I don't think a 1/8" difference in length is going to have any effect on holster selection.

I am quoting every gun manufacturer. "Barrel lengths are nominal." That means they may vary.
The 38 is really a 36.
The 44 is actually a 43.
You really want to go down this road? Numbers get rounded up or down.

Why? Same reason a .38 ... is not.

As I recall, the original movie version of this was, "Two by four, two by five, whatever it takes." Followed (in the same movie) by, "38, 39, whatever it takes." Can't remember the name of the movie off hand. But it was quite a long time ago.

Teri Garr (always yummy IMO) speaking in "Mr. Mom" starring Michael Keaton.

Yeah. The wiring scene. It was actually Keaton's line. Thanks.

It's easier to say two inch than one and seven eights of an inch.

For years (at least since 1980 when I started paying attention) S&W would mark the box end label as 2 [inch] if the barrel was 1 7/8". Then, some time in the first decade of the 2000's they switched and marked the box with a more accurate 1 7/8. Up to the present time.

Scene from Mr. Mom:
220/221 Volts Whatever it takes? - YouTube
Yeah, I guess from a marketing standpoint 2" just sounds better.
