I doubt you gentlemen can help me with this...
Can you please talk me out of getting a Model 58 at my LGS? Lazy ampersand, about 95+ condition, diamond magnas. Can be had for eight bills o.t.d. I need a new caliber like need a whole in my head...but it's an N frame, fixed sight, beast. I'm pretty sure the only way to stop thinking about it is to get it.

Diamond PC Magnas?
I've got an S-series 58. I won't be the one talking you out of it.

I think your talking to the wrong crowd if you want to be talked out of it. Get it, it's better than the 0.3% the banks paying you.

I apologize that logic does not allow me to talk you out of this.
Following one path of logic, assuming it's a S prefix and the diamond PC magna grips are matching, it would seem to be a highly desirable gun priced within reason and given the 95% condition I have no logical reason to talk you out of it.
Following the more abstract path of logic you introduced regarding needing it like you need a hole in your head I would suggest you most definitely need it because you have holes in your head that are quiet necessary ..... nostrils for breathing and smelling, auditory canals for hearing, and a mouth for talking and eating....... and therefore, you do need a new caliber like you need a hole in your head. I've used this line of reasoning more than once in deciding to get a "new" revolver.

I would even buy it. It is a 58, S SN,and 95%. When is the next time you are going to see one like that? IMHO no time soon.

Talk you out of it, OK. It is a service model that never caught on. No purpose really, 4" only, fixed sights, only came in blue and nickel. Rounds are expensive and can be difficult to find. If you are going to shoot a .41 mag, may as well get the .44 mag. It's only redeeming value is that is a N frame. Only around 20000 made, give or take. Who would want a gun that failed so miserably? That about covers it. (now, tell me where the gun is located)

Seems to be a pattern developing here.
You'll kick yourself for years if you don't get it.

Ok, I'll be the one to put the real thing in.
I have had a Ruger SA, M58 & M57.
I just got tired of so many calabers to load for.
Anything the .41 Magnum can do, a .44 Magnum will do just as well or better.
I sold off all the .41 magnums I had.
Then again, I went and got into 32-20 S&W revolvers.....
I have three of them now....
Oh well.
Maybe I didn't help.

Just be looking over your shoulders as you leave the shop. Some one might try to mug you on the way out. I would not do that but I might be there with a stack of bills to hand over.

I'm not going to.....
I'm not going to try to talk you out of it, as I consider myself a good person and not an evil one. Anyone who would tell you not to buy it has some evil intent.

My safe is full of guns that I needed like another hole in my head. How many deer rifles does one man need, how many shotguns, how many varmint rifles, how many pistols, and how many revolvers?
Basically, six or seven firearms would be close to the practical limit for any rational person.
But since when does rational have anything to do with buying guns? BUY THE GUN. you won't go wrong with a low production N frame even if you don't like to shoot it. I did not like shooting the one I had and it went down the road for a modest profit. No regrets at all!

The s&w m58 is my baby. No one leaves baby in the gun shop alone plus she needs a good home. Happiness is when baby has a warm barrel then she is happy, happy.
Get it you will love it the balance to power ratio is perfect.

Yeah, I think you have a "whole" (sic) in your head, without our help.
I fired a Model 58 once and it kicked harder than a Model 29! It was probably the nastiest revolver that I've ever fired.
Save your money (not much, for that gun is too expensive, I think) and buy a Model 629 with four or six-inch barrel. You'll shoot it better and the .44 Magnum ammo is easier to find and with greater variety than .41 Magnum. The M-629 is also stainless and has adjustable sights.
There are good reasons why the Model 58 didn't sell too well.
This is the best help that you'll get on a board like this.

^ I suspect you had the winning combination of the horrible factory grips and the original JSP hunting load, which was really hot. Fortunately I figured that out quickly, and the grips were replaced with something less terrible, and I never shot that load again except in a 6" M57. With a decent service load, the .41 is not bad to shoot in an M58.
