I have some of the 358156 cast up but have not had the time to start loading them. I actually used to shoot them in my .38 Supers also...
Can't remember what caliber, but I also tried some base up seated SWCs one time...was not quite as accurate as I recall...

Good thread. Great pictures! I currently own a 4" blue model 57 and a three screw Blackhawk Ruger
with 6&1/2" tube nd now a model 58. think I've bought a model 58 that should be coming soon(this next week)?
I've owned several over the years but. let most go. foolishly? Always been fond of the .41 magnums.

Ok...a question for all you .41 Shooters based on the .44 Special/.44 Magnum ratio thread...
When you guys shoot, do you use full Magnum load, Mid-range loads or target grade loads.
For me it depends on the gun... Most of the Smiths and Taurus guns get Target grade loads...210s at 950...basically the original Police loading. Sometimes they get 1100 fps loads and when practicing for hunting soming a little warmer but it is rare for them to get factory full Magnum loads.
Single Actions..****ger BHs and Freedom Arms get full loads. I've found that I am more consistent and accurate with full loads in SAs. These guns usually get heavier bullets from 250 to 300 grains with H110 powder. The little FA 97 gets full loads but with a lighter bullet, usually a cast 165-180 at 1300 fps.
So what say you...

Not yet, talk to seller this morning and he said he took it to his FFL and should ship today's post?
Since patients isn't a virtue of mine, I'll do my best?

For target shooting , I usually load to around 950fps give or take . For bullets I use either the Keith (HG258) 220 gr swc or an LBT WFN , again 220 gr . My favorite powder is WSF . For a little lighter loads I use 700X . I will have usually 2 cylinders of Full magnum loads to shoot when I'm finishing up , just to keep in practice with . Again , same bullets using IMR 4227 , Ramshot Enforcer or Alliant 2400 for full magnum loads . IMR 4227 gets the most use with a "Full " magnum primer , CCI 350 . My 58 is getting more use all the time . Regards, Paul

...well...do I feel lucky???
Have always thought the .41 magnum to be a superior round.
But am getting ahead of myself!
Anyway, for various reasons best left unsaid, nearly 40 years went by and finally got around buying what always wanted: Model 29 "Classic" .44 mag (had I known what I know now would have bought an older sample rather than new; enough said) and, as luck would have it, a Model 629 .44 magnum (8 3/8" barrel), a 1999 Smithy Mountain Gun, and Ruger New model Blackhawk, both chambered in .41 magnum.
After waiting for my local dealer to get me a few boxes of .41 magnum ammo, will finally get to shoot this amazing round.
But nearl had a heart attack when was give the total for the factory .41 mag ammo!
Been that I live in commiefornia, can't no longer buy ammo by mail...so is either high prices...or reloading...which will be doing after taking classes in the near future.
hope my 72 years of age doesn't get in the way of doing so, tho.
Regarding the Mountain Gun...one thing I'd like to do in the near future is replace the rubber Hogue grips with a pair of round-to-square frame conversion wooden grips.
Can any of you recommend who might make such grips???

Save some money buy the right equipment and reloading manual. Read, read, read, ask questions here and everywhere else you can think of. Dig in, it won't hurt. Herrett comes to mind but, several others can furnish you wood or other materials for grips.

I like the round butt on the Mountain Guns. However I use the old Smith and Wesson Combat grips on them. These are getting harder to find and he price keeps going up on them
They feel good in my hand and they carry nicely on the hip

657 3" & 58 Nickel
Here's my contribution to the 41 magnum! I just shot my 657 for the 1st time, and with some newly purchased Culina combats, no less.
I have to say it was quite a pleasure, shooting some Cowboy loads. I went thur 100 rounds pretty quick, and then shot some 200gr Precision One 44 special, in my 629-4 4" Mountain Revolver (ported) and was surprised, that the 41 magnums were noticeably lighter on recoil.
Perhaps not a surprise to others, all things considered but my thoughts prior to shooting, "I'm probably not going to go thru two boxes, the way this lil gun is going to kick!" I had two other guns to shoot (29-3 3" & 629-4 4'). Whatta wuss!
Now, I'm thinking about learning to reload in my old ...er senior years!
DoctorFronk, you can still order online ammo, you just need to get an 03FFL & COE. I just renewed my COE with the Politburo, and ordered those cowboy rounds in the pic.

My 617 has those type grips; maybe should look for a pair for the Mountain Gun.
By the way, the guy which will take reloading classes from is a certified NRA instructor...

Well I succumbed again....there was a Freedom Arms 97 with 5.5" barrel and black Micarta grips on GB... Excellent condition, with box paperwork and test target. Seller started at $1700 a couple of weeks ago and yesterday he reduced it to $1500. Emailed with him and agreed on $30 postage and he put a BuyNow on it...so the check went off today.
Just before this seller listed his gun I bid on one just like it but had the laminated grips that had a repaired crack. This one was almost $100 less than I would have had to pay for the other one.
This FourtyOneitus is expensive...wonder if it is covered by Medicare...

My Smith 58 usually gets either a Lee 195gr SWC or SACO 205 gr SWC under Unique for 1000 fps. The 14" Contender usually gets full hunting loads of Hornady 210 JHPs/H110 and the Marlin 20" 1894S gets a Ranch Dog RF255-411 (269gr wheelweights)/H110. That 269grainer is exiting at 1600 fps.

A question on a 657-2 Hunter....
In the SC of S&W 4th edition on page 320/321 there are several references to 6.5" Hunters/Classics with the full underlug barrel. I have one with one of the special edition HTR serial numbers. Does anyone know which gun mine would be?
It is a 6.5" with a fluted cylinder and square butt. Serial number is HTR0005. One just like is pictured on page 321...fluted cylinder and correct Hogue grips.
#103820 describes mine perfectly but this one has a fluted cylinder.
#103958 is an unconfirmed Hunter with a fluted cylinder
#103948 just says Classic Hunter
#170125 is a Lew Horton Special
Thanks...Bob

So how are the relaoding classes going... I have reloading since 1966+-...1970 for handgun...
Grips for the Mountain Gun... I have tried a bunch and the ones I just got from Thailand off of eBay have been the most comfortable so far. They are a round butt to square butt conversion but the bottom of the grip is rounded instead of square and flared. jaruwap.p is the Seller and he has a lot of nice grips for Smith at good prices. I have another set of his grips on a 3" 657 and are very comfortable to shoot and quite compact.
Bob
ps..in looking over his store, all he has in square butt grips at this time... Ahrends Grips also have a great selection of wood RB grips...

Sent a note to Lew Horton's asking if the Hunter was one of theirs....they said no...some of the HTR serial numbered guns did go through their distributorship but the S&W stock number for them is 103820.

I will be taking my first class this Sunday; hope to retain lots of stuff in my memory bank!
Have an early 70s RCBS Rockchucker press and some accessories (including tungsten carbide .357 and .44 mag dies) that are brand new as I never used for one reason or another (am sure will need more stuff, tho).
Then there is a reloading bench to be built too.
And might get one of two used Dillon progressive presses that someone I know is selling if the price is right.
Regarding pistol grips...ordered imitation ivory jobs for both .41 magnum Mountain Gun and New Model Blackhawk (the ones for the S&W are the round-to-square butt type), as well as Colt Phyton.
Bought them from Boone Trading Company (I think that is the right name).
Hope all work as intended...

?This particular Mod. 57 was sent back to the mother ship, fitted with a 6" Mod. 29 barrel and cylinder and returned. I keep meaning to ask if the original barrel and cylinder are available but, I really wonder why some one would go to that trouble when they already owned a .44?"
He probably owned the 57 first. After Dirty Harry 29's were expensive and hard to come by. The rising tide floated all magnum N-frame boats, so your friend probably bought what he could get, a 57, and sent it to S&W for rechambering.
Then when the 629 came out, what the heck, two is better than one, no?

The reloading class went quite well; for our effort--there were other three gentlemen taking the class too--got 15 freshly loaded .45 ACP rounds at the end of the class!
Now hope to remember everything that was thought!
Meantime received the Boone Trading Company's (the couple who owns this company are great folks to deal with, by the way) imitation ivory grips for the Phyton, Blackhawk, and Mountain Gun.
Haven't installed them yet, but looks like all with work fine.
It is the Mountain Gun which am most interested to see what changes will take place with its new grips; will install them after shooting it this Saturday after a good cleaning...

They are a nice gun...
I bought one in about 1990 that was unfired. It had been purchased by a farmer who had never shot it. Told me all his friends wanted to do was shoot black powder guns so he never got around to shooting it. Still had the Cokes on it but the presentation case was long gone...

When I retired mine were on the top of my list too. But when my LGS had the $699 sale on all the new s&w n frames and some were in nickel I wasn’t in a pickle I wanted all of them in that world famous s&w nickel. Shucks I have no regrets I still have more to go. These are worst than potato chips.
When I shot the new m58 I woke every one shooting those 9mm’s that day. All eyes were on m ain’t no 44, she’s a 41,,,,I owned a few 44’s most of my life. I missed out on the 41 magnums.

RKmesa;
In reviewing older posts, I discovered something that I never knew S&W had ever done, or would do. In your post, #341, of the the .41 Mag. 1964 - 2014, thread, you posted pictures of an engraved S&W .41 magnum, shown with a S&W Presentation case, made of contact paper & Masonite. their presenting one of their fine revolvers, in that manner, lowers my esteem, of S&W, considerably.

A friend sent me some 248 grain cast gas check semi-wadcutters that really outperformed anything in the 200-220 grain range that I've shot. I need to find that mould - 6.8 grains of Unique is just wonderfully accurate with these out of both my Smiths, a 4" 58 and 4" 57.

SuperMan, thanks for the link.
I have two .41 Mags coming but not for another month or so.
A 6" 57 and a 58. I can't wait to get them, clean them all up and get them dirty.

I have had great luck with my molds from Veral @ LBT Molds . I have shot many 210 Long Flat Nose bullets from my mold . He also made a " Keith " swc 220 gr that shots well . Yrs ago had Tom @ Accurate molds make the 410-240 F , a 240 gr swc that shoots accurately . I felt the little heavier swc shot further and still retained accuracy . My 58 , after some work shoots as good as anyone would want it . I would never sell it . I had a LH shoulder holster rig made esp for it . It always carries well when ii need it to . I have always felt the 41 mag was under rated . Good luck , Regards, Paul

He had all the s&w n frames marked $699. Years ago. I wish I used more plastics and bought them all.

Talk about a bargain!!
S&W MODEL 57 FACTORY ENGRAVED 41 MAGNUM 4" BLUE - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 795607101
Only a few of these Class A engraved 57s were made in 1979 and 1980...
I still have a new in the shipping container nickle 4". I sold a blue one that the PC was still wrapped in the factory plastic for $3K two years ago....

I've never seen this thread before so i'll add my .41 Magnums.
Here's my M57 N806603
I think its a beautiful handgun. I love the blue finish on these older S&Ws more than SS or nickle.
I also have this M58.
This one is going to be my shooter.

It has been a while since anything .41 has been posted here...so anyone have anything new??
Earlier this year I sent a Uberti Cattleman in .357 Magnum to Jack Huntington for conversion to .41 Special...came back a few months ago and it has been a great shooter...
Also if anyone is looking to make up some of the old ManStopper loads with a hollow base wadcutter bullet, Matt's Bullets is again offering them...

I was the last one to post back in July.
Since then I traded my M57 towards another gun. I never thought I would part with it. I thought it was (I still do) one of the most beautiful guns I had.
I still have my M58 and love it.

I never did shoot my 57 but I have shot my 58.
I don't know where the first round went but I was pretty happy that the other 5 punched holes in this 8" paper plate at 100 ft.
I still have another 600 rounds.

Thank you. That was the very first time I had ever shot it.
I got 9 for 12 at the plate and then moved to man like targets.

A few weeks ago I took a "drive" and ended up in sunny Texas just ahead of the Carona-Wave... Got to meet up with a couple of the Board Members and some old friends from my days at DPD who I had not seen since my last visit in 2006...
Was on GunBroker one day in between visits and saw a newly listed Pawn Shop offering of a 657-4 PC Lew Horton Defensive Revolver...since it had a BuyNow of about half of what they have been selling for I pushed the BuyNow.
It was waiting for me at my dealers when I got home last week...got to shoot it today and took a long a 3" just to compare the two...
All the pics are in the links rather than posting them here...
S&W 657-4 PC 2.6"... - 24hourcampfire
S&W 657 3" 1986 - 24hourcampfire
One more gone from the Bucket List....
Hopefully some of you have found some more .41s...

Since I was always a fan of the simple utilitarianism of the Military & Police revolvers and carried a 6" Model 10 as my duty revolver during my years with the NJ Highway Patrol (which merged with the State Police in 1979), I really love the Model 58. It's my absolute favorite revolver!
PS- I own a set of proper PC Magna grips for it, but it never wears them except for the occasional photo op.

First post!
(actually I think I registered years ago but I think it’s on an old email so..)
Long story short, got into the shooting sports as a kid in the 90s, and have always loved revolvers (especially the smiths).
Took a liking to the idea of the .41, but wanted ‘my’ first handgun to be a .44. That’s it’s own story.
The first time I ever walked into a local shop near where I worked, I noticed a long barreled nickel plated smith in a presentation box. This was maybe 2-3 years ago.
It was a 57.
It called out to me, but I never took the plunge.
And it sat there, with no takers...till now.
N618xxx.
Has some marks, etc but overall it’s in good condition. Unfortunately the front sight looks a bit damaged as the rear of it is lifted. Hopefully it’ll be a small fix; can’t wait to clear dros, pick it up and get it to the range once the world opens up a bit.

Here is my most recent addition to the .41 Family
I snagged this ANIB Model 58, early N serial number, and am looking forward to some range time.
