Default Grails guns...I never thought...

I'd ever have one. I love the .357 cartridge and its versatility especially in a k frame. I have many. I only own an Anaconda and a 629 for .44s.

Recently I ran across this PIC of I'm guessing a Lew Horton 629. I absolutely love it..whatever it is.

If you guys could help me out with some specifics like cost, where to find etc I'd greatly appreciate it. Also if its indeed what this is. I'm just no expert on N frames.

Appears to be a Lew Horton 624 in 44 Special made approx 1985. Value NIB 1000.00 or so.Best source would be an auction site or the forum classifieds.Place a WTB ad in the classifieds and l am sure someone will help you out.
FWIW a Lew Horton 629 appears similar but heaver barrel and pretty stout recoil with magnum loads.

I although I like the 44 special ammo availability is not as good. So a 629 is what I'd look for

I think this is what you are looking for? It is a 624 Lew Horton Special, stainless steel, .44 special, 3" barrel, round butt, with Goncalo Alves combat grips. Made about 1985-1987. I found this a few months ago for $750 with a box at a gun show. The box was in just fair condition. It was very dirty and the grips were really scuffed up but, in my opinion, it cleaned up fairly well.

It could also be a 629-1, .44 Magnum, also distributed by Lew Horton.

Or a 629-5, another Lew Horton gun.

the gun you are looking for may not be a lew Horton ...S&W made "combat magnums" that look like this in 44 mag.very nice guns I would add...I found a blue steel one a cpl.years ago and love it...don't overlook the 657 3 inch 41 magnum as well

If you are looking for Versatility in this set-up, look for a 3" 629. Then buy a set of N-Frame Round Butt Combat Stocks.

Round Butt Combats are what is in your pic. They are not cheap, but they are worth it.

If you get a 629, it will allow you to shoot both 44 Magnums and 44 specials.

If you don't want to pay a Premium for the Lew Horton Name, you could go that Route.

Here is a Video of Hickock45 with his 3" 629 wearing Ahrends Round Butt stocks:

Good luck to you.

I have two 629 4" Square Butt guns, and they are excellent.

I have a 629-1 Wearing Kurac Stocks:

And a (Rare) 629 No Dash (Pinned and Recessed) Wearing Keith Brown Stocks.

They are Great Shooters.

I am sure your 3" will be enjoyed when you get it.

They handle 44 specials like they were nothing. Magnums are fun to shoot too.

If you want a .44 Magnum then there were 629s made back in the mid-1980s that look just like the pictured 624 except the barrel is not tapered. They were made in .41 Magnum also. The standard grip on all of them were the pictured finger groove Combats...

I have a 657 3" from 1986 and it is a great shooter and carry gun...

Since no one has shown you one, here you go.
ANC prefix Lew Horton, combat magnum 44
Your best bet is the forum or an online auction, one of these will rip the lungs out of a thousand dollar bill and I've seen them listed for as much 1600 for a really crisp nib example.

I know! :-)
It belonged to one of me sergeants. I bugged him incessantly for a few years before he caved. He's also the one that told me about the 657 3".
Don't know where you live, but you'll be lucky to find one in the box with combat grips, box, etc., in California for much less than $1200 - probably closer to $1500. If you find one with other grips and no box, you're looking at $900+.
