I am not too versed on the Smith revolvers. I am not planning to shoot the gun as I am more of a collector. I found a model 51 that I would say may be unfired. It does have a touch of muzzle wear so rate it 98%. Cylinder line is almost not visible. I think the muzzle wear may be from storage. Has the correct box in good condition, wax paper, cleaning rod too. These are too common and I am much less knowledgeable about Smiths vs a Colt. Its a square butt, blued finish. Orignal walnut Smith stocks that are perfect. If it wasn't for the small amount of muzzle wear I would say the gun is Like New.

Any ideas on value based on the above description?

I had to look in the book to see what a M51 is. I don't have a clue what the value would be. Maybe someone else will give you an answer.

There have been two S&W 51 revolvers come up for sale near me this past year. One had both cylinders but no box, the other had the box but no extra cylinder. They both had been used but well cared for. IIRC, the boxed gun was offered at $800.00 for several weeks and then withdrawn due to lack of interest. The 51 with two cylinders was traded for a nickel snubbie S&W 19.

I would not call the gun you described a 98% condition gun.

I sold a 51 to a VERY motivated buyer last year for $1300.00, shipped. It was in excellent condition, but had no box, tools or papers. It was also a later model with an "M" prefix s/n. I've seen prices all over the place for this model. The early ones are more collectible, especially the round butt models of which there were only 600 made.

As you know, it's a J frame 4" .22 Magnum. They are (to me, surprisingly) expensive; those in the condition you describe with box and contents have sold recently in the $750-800 range, which is $200 more than a standard .22 LR version, the model 34. I am not a .22 Magnum fan in a handgun but that is just me :). Hope this is helpful.
