Model 10 Fans?
I saw a really nice Model 10-5 at the local gun show today and had a hard time leaving the show without it. It just felt nice in the hand and was in exceptional condition.
Any of you folks fans of the Model 10?
The fellow had it at $475 but said he would let it go for $425. I've looked around and this seems like what they are going for on Guninternational. Is this a fair price or not?

4" barrel? $425 for a 4" Model 10-5, if truly in "exceptional" condition, is a fair price, IMO. And especially if that's OTD. And if it's, say, a 2" snub, it's a really good price. Again, IMO.

Well, most of my M&P revolvers are from the times before model numbers were used, but here's an ANIB Model 10-5 from my collection. Sure, I like them. What's not to like?

I agree with DAinTX.
I love Model 10s. I loved them when I bought my first one, pictured here. It's actually a round butt but way back when I put these grips on it. I have to post pictures all of the Model 10s in my collection; someday soon. I believe I have 6 (it's bad when you can't remember for sure!). 4 snubs and 2 4"ers, including this one:
Smith & Wesson Forum - ISCS Yoda's Album: First attempt - Picture
The other 4" is a rare .357 Magnum that I thought I had a picture of - I'll get one soon. I just used it to score 250 out of 250 on the Texas CHL Instructor's test.

Love the ten (M&P) in all its configurations. A no nonsense defensive tool with lots of class. With modern loads, it's an excellent performer. Naturally, I prefer a pre-83.

My Smith & Wesson "collection" started with an ex-LEO 10-6. I had it for a good twenty years before I added a second model 10. A 10-5 with a 2" barrel and round butt. Neither is a show piece, both have plenty of honest wear and both are sweet shooting. The 10-5 is now in carry rotation.

Like JP@AK I prefer the pre model M&P versions but that whole family of K-frame revolvers is my favorite to acquire. Here is a 10-7 that sits in my nightstand.

I'm a fan!
If it's a 3" or 2" in great shape that's a very good price, if it's a 4" it's an ok price.
Here's my 2" 10-9 that gets carried a good bit.

Model 10 in its various incarnations and iterations is one of the most prolifically successful handguns in history.
Yes, I'd say there are a few fans.
If the one you looked at is mechanically sound and in good cosmetic condition, $425 is a perfectly reasonable price.

I just picked up my 2nd M&P M10 this past week. I am also a fan. My first is a 1946 transition, not original box, and the new to me 10-8 3" HB.

Yes, probably a fair price if condition is superb. I like the Md 10 too, especially in nickel. Here's one that was made for the Detroit Police.

Buds Gun Shop sells Model 10 police turn-in's (when he can get them) for $299 shipped. Then you have your FFL fees on top. So, for $325-$350 you have a nice Model 10 that was used by some police organization.
Now, you are looking at a - I will assume - non-police revolver for $425......sounds like a fair ballpark to me.
I have three model 10's and a model 64 in the house!!! The 64 is a three inch barreled version. The model 10's are all 4 inch heavy barrels.
I like'em...........

Well I guess I got the response I expected but I always like to ask because everyone here has their own thoughts and attitudes towards each of the S&W models.
In this case and a lot of the other guns I ownI like that they are very utilitarian, no bells and whistles just an honest clean gun. I like guns that are useful and don't have a lot of fluff that gets in the way and detracts from their function. This is why I'm drawn to the model 10.
Thanks for all of the thoughtful responses. I'm off to the gun show.

I think anyone who has ever owned a Model 10, or even shot one, is a fan. My current house gun is a 10-5 with 4" standard barrel.
The M10 is fun to shoot, feels good in the hand, and with good ammo will afford you plenty of protection. A fine tool that also just looks cool as hell.

Now that is one cringe worthy pair of pictures.

I have a nice nickel 10-7.2 inch. I cannot get a picture to load. Double action is as smooth as any revolver I have had.

As long as it's in good shape.....
As long as it's in good shape mechanically, it's definitely 'worth it'. Model 10 is the defining .38 caliber medium frame. Darn right I'm a fan. I had to sell mine but one day I will get it back!!!

My Winning Pair of 10s
I am a K frame guy but only have two M-10s, both 10-5. They get carried and they get shot. The M&P/M-10 is the arch typical DA revolver. Like the Winchester M-94 every red blooded American should have at least one.

I love my 4" 10-5. Soft shooting, accurate and comfortable. Easily one of my favorite range and woods guns. It's always the first center fire revolver I let new shooters shoot.

For his birthday this year I have given my step-son this nice Model 10-5 with a Tyler-T Grip installed. It came with a nice set of non-diamond PC stocks mounted, but I had this older set with the diamonds and a squared-off butt that are just so comfortable that I mounted them instead.
We will have a lot of fun together as I teach him to shoot the P.P.C. or the Los Alamitos course, with him using his new-to-him Model 10 while I use my old Heavy Duty. Both hit DEAD ON where-you-want-them-to using a Lee 160 grain cast SWC and 3.5 grains of Bullseye.
Both revolvers have delightful double-actions and if the Model 10 has the slight advantage of an inch more of barrel, the Heavy Duty has a thinner front sight and less recoil. We'll have a lot of fun together and the boy will learn to shoot.
Up until now, the boy has not had his own firearm as all my revolvers were in actual use by ME for competition shooting and I didn't have one to pass on to him. Here, your permit-to-transport is specific to ONE individual, so you can't give someone a firearm and then be caught taking it to the range next week once it's in the other person's name. My wife and step-daughter on the other hand have each taken over my Glock and S&W 3904 and put them in their own names. Well now he'll have his own firearm (and he prefers revolvers!) instead of having to "borrow" my K-38 Full Lug. Although he hasn't shot the Model 10 yet, he was certainly pleased when I presented it to him. Note his very Mexican "we don't need no badges" sombrero.

Here's my 10-5. Great trigger and it's plenty accurate. Has a little pitting in the barrel but shoots so darn good! Just had it out last weekend. Might bring it out again this weekend. Also serves as my home protection gun. Super easy to shoot for me or my wife (who's not a gun person).

Oh yes, I like Model 10s, but like JP@AK & JohnRippert my interest lies more with the earlier M&Ps. My K-Frame collection currently spans > a 60 year period.
Just picked up a police trade-in 10-5 last week, not much finish, but tight and shoots like a new gun.
Here's a 30 year spread, as you can see, the Model 10 hasn't changed much over time.

I have four of the M10; a 2", 3" and two 4". One of the 4" was kinda mediocre when I got it so it's my project gun. Hammer spur had been broken and ground so I had it bobbed. Had the grip frame converted to round butt and the trigger smoothed, and I installed a lighter rebound spring and a Hogue rubber grip. It's a real good shooter and it hangs beside my recliner, loaded and ready. The others haven't been touched except to shoot them and clean them.

10-5 4" with round butt ...
... shipped in 1965 on long term loan to my daughter. She likes the way it fits her hand. I loaned her husband a 2" version, but failed to get a photo. I get to visit them at the range once in a while

I vote yes on the 10s
I have just two 10s
A pre 10 M&P Blue
A 10-7 Nickel
I would love a 2,3,5 and 6 inch.
The only thing holding me back is money.

I used to think the Model 10/M&P was "quaint and old fashioned." As I got older, and smarter, and I realized that I was "quaint and old fashioned" myself, I found I liked the Model 10. And I really like the older ones with the skinny standard barrel. I've had a half dozen over the years, but only this one now.
$425.00 is a pretty good price for one in really good condition I think. Average condition ones are regularly tagged just under $400.00 locally.

I was always a J frame guy. Love my model 60 with 3 inch barrel and adj. sights! Then one day a friend who works at a local gun shop called me to say he had just put a model 10 K frame out in the case and I should come and look at it asap. Turned out to be a 4" 10-6 built in 1969 with just slight holster wear at the tip of the muzzle. Very clean and tight. Was a security guard company's turn in, hardly fired. $215. So I bought it. My biggest surprise is how well it shoots. Even with fixed sights, it is more accurate than any of my adj. sight model J frames. I mean it shoots! Best and smoothest trigger I have ever felt on a revolver. Makes me look good at the range but its the gun, not me. Nice balance and carries easily in an old duty holster I have. I hear the same from other model 10/ K frame owners. Maybe one of S&W's best ever.

That's no surprise. K-Frames are just so much more shootable. They're the perfect size. The J-Frame sacrificed shootability for maximum concealment potential and ease of daily concealed carry. No comparison in terms of shootability.

The other, a 10-5 RB snubby, Seattle Police Dept marked. Very silky broken-in DA on it.

Pinned M10
I thought I posted this picture but I don't see it. This is my old Wells Fargo turn in, nickel plated M10, the one that keeps me company when I am watching TV.

This gun is VERY accurate. At CQB distances it's amazing. If I was left with only one gun I'd be well armed with this revolver keeping me company.

Thank you.
It shoots a hair left at 25yrds, but pretty much fine at real fighting distances.

Wow there are a lot of you out there. Glad I joined the club but it looks like I have some catching up to do by the looks of all of those photos.
I did see a Model 10 in the heavy barrel at the show as well for $500 and it was in pretty decent shape but not as nice as the one I purchased.
I'd love to have a 2 or 3 inch model. My 3 inch model 31 in 32 S&W Long is a great shooter. I hope this one shoots as nice as it does.

Now, you are going to need a Model 64 to keep it company. Same gun with a little more bling in stainless. You will enjoy your 10! Bob

I had both at one time. Moved the 64 though and I've been regretting the decision. It was a fantastic shooter!

And their grandpaw. My deceased father-in-law's Navy issue victory model.

Another M10 fan here -
Both are Model 10-5's, 2" & 4". Eldest son "borrowed" the 2", guess it lives there now. The 4" stays home, as it's the same model I carried in the military.
