hello, I own my brothers (passed away) s/w 38 police special he had as a police officer back in late 70`s. I would like to get some nice wood grips for it but have no idea the difference between a "j" or "k" frame. the number inside the "yoke" is 46462. any help?

Okay - a few comments here.

First, I'm sorry for your loss. I, too, have lost a brother.

Second, S&W never called any of its revolvers a "Police Special." Mostly likely what your brother carried was a .38 Military & Police Model 10. If you open the cylinder and look on the frame in the yoke cut, you'll see the model number as MOD 10-x. Very likely it is a Model 10-5 or 10-7, but it could be some other dash number. That's assuming it holds six shots.

Again, assuming a six shot cylinder, it will be a K frame size. The correct stocks would be the K frame "PC" (Plain Clothes) grips, properly called Modified Magna stocks. They will be checkered and will lack the smooth diamond around the grip screw.

The number in the yoke area has no meaning. The serial number you need is on the bottom of the grip frame. Very likely it will have a letter D in it. It could be a C, but if your brother was on the force in the 1970s, a D is more likely.

I'll include some photos.

...the commercial value is not that much, probably in the $400 range at most in great shape. Therefore, if it has sentimental value for you, I would keep your brother's gun as it was when he owned it.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Wood stocks for K Frame revolvers can be found in many places including Amazon, E-bay, etc.

If he was a uniformed cop, it's most likely his revolver is a K-frame Model 10 at that time. If you provide the serial number on the butt, it can be approximately dated. eBay is a good place to look for grips. Any grips stated to be for a K-frame square butt S&W should fit correctly. However, you did not say why grips are needed. Are the original grips missing or damaged? In any event, assuming you have the original grips, you should keep them with the gun even if you decide to buy another pair.
