Default Model 64 problem

I picked this gun up at a LGS in the next county. It came with box and paper, etc.
I checked it out in the store, locked up tight and the timing was perfect. I even dry fired it. I brought it home, cleaned it up and put it in the safe. A few months ago I took it out to give it some love and dry fired it a couple of times and then the hammer would not go into battery by pulling the trigger. I manually pulled the hammer back and tried the action again and the same thing happened after working perfectly a few times.
I took it to a gun smith and he pulled the plate off and his initial thoughts were that the action was hampered by old gummed up oil. The hammer block was stuck to the side plate.
So, I guess the lesson of this story is, you can check it out, but until you really use it you just will not know.
Any other Oh No! stories?

An old rule: new, or just new to you, it gets detail stripped, cleaned and lubed soon as you get home.

I've pulled off a side plate, looked in awe and put it back on. No way I'm going to start removing the mechanical geniuses. I might, in the future be tempted to blast it with brake cleaning fluid and lube it and then put the side plate back o n.

My model 10 has a problem, it wants to eat me out of house and home!

Congrats on a nice gun, at least you found out when it didn't matter.

I’ll second that.

When I buy an older gun, I do take off the stocks and blast Berrymans brake cleaner through every opening, then drip some oil in and stir it around with the air compressor. Not sure if that’s right, wrong, or if I’ve just been lucky, but I’ve never had a problem with any of them.

I like the gun! So what is the outcome? Is everything in working order now? I use the gun scrubber method followed by CLP, or similar. I can't wait that long before I shoot them. Bob

The gunsmith still has it, it's been sixty days now but he does quality work for a lot of folks. He did work on my nickle 13 inch and it spins like a gyroscope. It's worth the wait. But in all honesty, I'm hoping he will call soon.

Maybe I'm living right but I've never done that and I've never had a problem.

Next gun will probably be a wreck now that I said that.......

I would be finding out if there is more wrong than just the gummies. If old, gummed up oil is all that is wrong, 60 days is an unreasonable time to wait for what is a 20 minute job. Get yourself a set of basic screwdrivers and a Kuhnhausen manual. It ain't rocket science to semi-detail strip that gun and clean it up. Heck, you could get a can of brake cleaner and spray into all the orifices you find until it runs out clean, then spray with a good lube, and make your gun serviceable.
