Default Model 58 Buy or Pass

I will be looking at a 58 with box & papers with a 3 digit "N" serial number. Seller claims gently used 90-95% with non diamond target stocks.
Is this a $800 gun? I think $100 too high.
Were N Cokes made without diamonds?
Thanks
Bob

If it is 90%, it is too high, 95% OK. That is for a 58, not a 58-2.

I do not fancy myself a grip expert but here is my 2 cents worth:
There were some smooth targets made in a "coke" profile but not during the era of this revolver. There were not (to my knowledge) any non-diamond "coke" profile checkered grips made for S&W back in the day. There are some made today with medallions (like Kuracs).

Good Luck & we need pics!!!

I agree with you and with USM1rifle above. It is a tad too high.

It likely has smooth Target stocks from the era of the gun (late 1970s). I agree with usm1rifle, OK at 95% (but you'll need to find the scarce N frame PC Magnas if you want an "original" gun) and not the recent -1.

While that price may seem high, S&W 58's don't come up for sale often, certainly not in my area. I would buy it, enjoy it, and take my time looking for an even nicer version. I bought a used blue steel 58 back in 2008 with the box, unnumbered but proper stocks, no papers, in about 70% condition cosmetically for $550.00. I carry it, but intend to have the factory nickel it in a few years. I have been searching for a nickel version since I bought mine.

The Std. Catalog on pg 221 says the Model 58 was discontinued in 1969. Is this not correct ? Also, would a low 3 digit N s/n likely be 1969 production? It also says M 58 production was 20,287.That sounds like a high number.
Anyone have more information?
Thanks
Bob

I'm in the same area and have had the same problem finding 58's. Nickel 58's are like the proverbial hen's tooth. There are a couple dealers in the state that have high condition 58's from time to time but their prices are always HIGH. Some one will pay that $800 sooner or later.

More like 1967-68, and yes the 20,000 number is about right. They are hard to find cause those that have them, keep them. Go buy the gun.

Even without the correct PC Magna grips with box, paperwork and a set of S&W Target Stocks $800 is very reasonable if the condition is or better than described.

58s were made through 1974. There were a lot of them made but there aren't a lot for sale...

I saw a very eary S-Serial numbered (Lazy Amersand) 58 with Diamond Magnas in excellent, excellent condition. No Box no papers.

$800 cash and it would have been mine out the door.

I held it, I looked at it, I tried to mind meld with it. but it did not scream take me home.

I had the cash, Eight $100 bills.

I let it go.

Next time I go back, if it is still there, I will have the same conversation with it.

But to me, as nice as it was, it was not Model 57, 29 or 66 Nice. You know what I mean?

Can't answer your question, but back in the middle 1990s I was working the gun counter when one of these came in on consignment. It was about 98-99% condition, all honest holster wear. Mechanically perfect. We were asking $450.00 for it, based on what the customer wanted out of it. I was tempted to buy it, but was a little strapped for cash at that time, so didn't. Sure wish I had found a way to come up with the money. It didn't stay in the display case for long.
