Nickle model 18
Hello to all
I was wondering if nickle finish on a smith 18 revolver is rare
I have a guy that I work with that has one he is thinking about selling and I am trying to come up with a fair price no box or papers by the way but it is in excellent shape no wear
Any help would be appreciated thanks

The Catalog says "nickle finish not cataloged, but produced, add 50% to 75%".
Make sure it is factory.

Remove the grips on the revolver and check for any re work marks.
How is the overall condition? Are the hammer or trigger plated?
Gun in hand. Or, good photos.
A blanket question as to value of a gun that did not come in
nickel originally is moot without a definitive description.
Good luck

I had one way back in the 80's, in the box, etc. Let it get away at a gun show and have regretted it since...

We had a thread not too long ago about a nickel 17 that sold for $11,000+ if I remember correctly. Hard to say what a factory nickel 18 might go for. Need to see pictures.

I have one but it started life as a BLUE gun. In the early 70's we sent it back to Smith and had it nickeled. It has the BLUE extractor and smooth target rosewood grips. Later down the road I added RR/WO, ranger trigger and target hammer. Original?.........No. But still a nice pistola.

eeccollision - here is a Nickel Mod 18 for reference
Md-18 Nickel That does letter.
They are extremely rare and rarely come up for sale. With the N stamp, I would personally be buying it and asking questions later.
Good Luck

Ask him what he wants. Let him tell you. Make sure it isn't a current mfg. with the IL. If he offers it to you for less than $1500 take it immediately, don't let him change his mind. If over $5000 agree to buy it "if" it will letter as factory nickel.

I have come across five or six confirmed now between auctions and private sales. I think they are pretty scarce but not to the extent of Model 17s. Two went in the $3000.00 range
I wish the nickle Model 18s had the blued front sight like most other early nickle Models did.

There is a nickled pre model 18 with a blued front sight out there. I have yet to see a model marked 18 with one.

Nice find! If you click on Download at the top of the Forum home page, you should find the order form for the history letter. It may take up to 6 months to arrive but be patient.
At the time your model 18 was produced, it had a 4" barrel with a ramp front sight and the model 17 had a 6" with a Patridge front; that was about the extent of the difference between the two. Please repost here once you have the letter?

You lucky one, I hope. Could you want to double your money? A verified nickel 18 would be a nice find. I only have a lonely lettered 3T model 18-2, but in blue. I hope you have a good camera.
