Model 36 Chief Special, 1 3/4 inch brl. SN 1J77xx. Any info would be appreciated.

Ah...the old floating J serial number. Off hand I think your looking at a '71-'73 date. Others will fill in the detail. Enjoy your 36

I think Bill got the 1 and the J reversed. The Standard Catalog has the early 1J serial numbers in 1982.

Bill is correct. The first floating J series included the letter J and up to five numerical digits was '71-'72 starting with 1J1 and ending with 999J99. 1J77XX would have occurred in 1971.

The second "floating J" series included the letter J with six and always six digits was '82-'83 starting with 1J10000.

P.S. The SCSW-3rd has a typo on the J-Serial Prefix for 1971-1972 line . . . it should read "1J1 - 999J99"
