Default model 57 in .44 mag

The model 57 was a .41 mag.

If you have a .44 mag shooting model 57 it is most likely because someone swapped the frame on a 29 with a 57 frame - or they put a 29 barrel and cylinder on a model 57.

Models 27, 29, 57 and other N Target frames are identical. There have been numerous reports of revolvers with mis-marked model numbers as a result. Regardless, by definition a .44 Magnum carbon steel S&W N-Frame revolver manufactured after ca. 1957 is a Model 29, regardless of the model number stamped in the yoke cut.

As pointed out it is possible an original Model 57 may have had the barrel and cylinder replaced with those from a .44 Magnum. In this case it would be a converted Model 57.

Saw one at the Coon Dog Trials in Lima Ohio last year. It was from the era of the "Dirty Harry" movies when 44mags were in high demand. It was said that S&W was using 41 marked frames to fill the 44 orders. At least that was the venders story

A common factory error with so many models being built on the same frame. I have seen several dozen S&Ws with the incorrect model numbers stamped on them. Doesn't affect value.
