Model 28 Highway Partrolman
My Father has decided he wants to sell his Model 28 because it has been in a safe since 1976 when he bought it. He says it has been to the range once and that was it. He has some other interests right now and just isn't interested in holding on to this one. With that said, he doesn't want to give it away either. Can y'all help with the value on this so I can tell him where to start? Picture link below...

That's a nice Highway Patrolman your Dad has.
Depending on who you ask and location, I'd think you might get anywhere from $650 - $750 for one as nice. This one looks near new. Looks like maybe the rear sight base might be loose.

Nearly new in the box with accessories...collector grade gun. I'm thinking $1K to $1,200.

Near new. Box. papers. Tools. Nothing less than $800.00 but probably closer to $1,000.00. Just do not drop it on the floor. Been there. And cried.

Around here $750 ,if you find the right person maybe $850 with the box and tools. I got one last March same condition ,but no box or tools for $550. Every price is subject to what part the country your in,their not in the 27 price range around here yet. I don't think they should be either. We are lucky in that several Police departments use to issue the 28 so we see them often for sale.

Every area will be different. Around here $500 just the gun. $650 -$750, possibly $800 for the whole package

In my neck of the woods, that's $850 easy, $1000 if the right guy comes along. Very nice!

I'm with SaxonPig and b.guggenmos. 4", box, papers, tools, barely a turn line...I'd set the reserve at at least $1,000 and see what happens. I would not take a penny under $800, and that's only if he really doesn't want it and/or needs the cash.

I'd kill to have another just like that. (It was the first revolver I have ever purchased with the help of my Dad, in 1972).

I have (2) Mod. 28-2 4" guns, but would be happy to pay $1000 for that package and sell one of my very nice shooters.

I would have said...... $600-650 based on the last one I saw for sell in a LGS...but that was two years ago.
Number of posts lately about how fast the 28 are going up in value.... so I'll defer to the folks above........
That said......
selling it to a local gun shop will get your Dad maybe $400 to 500.
Putting it on consignment at a LGS.....locally would cost your Dad about 15% of the sale price.
Selling it here .........Priceless !!!!!!!!!
N-frames are not my thing; I only have two a 4" 28 (almost new but a great gun) and a 6 1/2inch Registered Magnum...... so I have no horse in this race. FWIW I only got the 4" 28 ...... for TEOTWAWKI and I need a good belt gun to shoot .357 magnums all day.... every day......that and it looks so coooool with Executioner's stag's and a T-grip......LOL

Fun to ponder what's happened to M28's going prices and their step on the 'desirability scale'.
I'm old enough to recall when they were S&W's go-to 'econo-gun'.
Now, even well-used, they sell for more than most folks made in a month back when they were considered that.

If I saw that package in my lgs, I would figure out a way to bring it home even at the 1200 mark. Not every day you can go out and buy a new model 28. That one's close enough to new for me to consider it new. And I would put the box and acruments in safe storage and shoot the gun often as possible.
I'm in north Florida and that gun would bring 1200 pdq here.

If that gun was advertised in the classified section on this forum, I think you could list it for $900 and get someone to take it quickly.
You could possibly get more for that.
There just aren't a lot of true New in Box 28-2s out there. That is one of the nicest ones I have ever seen.

Sorry I can't offer any advice on a good price. I did however want to jump into this thread and compliment you on your photography.

It's excellent, still new condition. Original owner. Safe queen.
Easily $1,000 to $1,200 if not $1,500 ++++ @ auction.

I just paid $700.00 for this one, a 1970 year, with the box and some of the papers, but not all, and no tools. The grips are not original, but I believe the gun to have been unfired, although the seller didn't make that claim.
With the rest of the papers, and tools, and with the original stocks, I could see $800-850.00 around here.

No offense intended to previous replies. But when people say "around here", "my neck of the woods", etc. that means almost nothing in the age of the internet!
Your market for this gun is the whole country, if not the world!
If I were you, I'd get that gun from your dad, at any price, and KEEP IT!
If he must sell it, open an account on Gun Broker and list it. With your awesome photography skills, you will probably be shocked at what somebody would pay for that beauty!

Humm, I don't know. Does the shotgun shell propping it up go with the deal? If so, I would add at least 50 cents to the prices mentioned above.

I'd give you $1K all week long for a package like that. But I know what I would do with it.
In my opinion you should work out a deal with your Dad so that you can be the new owner. Unless you have a whole bunch of NIB guns that belonged to your Dad, that one will be priceless to you when the inevitable and terrible day comes that he's not around any longer. If you have a couple to spare, trade him for a couple shooters. He can sell those and end up with the same money in his pocket.

Guys I really appreciate all of the responses. Unfortunately, my father has been in the hospital since a few days after I made this post. I will check back with him once he is out to find out what he wants to do.

Prayers for a full recovery.
I lost my dad three years ago and miss him every single day. He gave me this one (Model 15-2) while he was still with us. I will treasure it for as long as I live and leave it to my daughter when I die. She was close to her grandfather and would like to have his gun someday.

No offense taken but I don't order online and I don't pay online prices. I have told people that quote online prices if that's what they want then they have sell it online. Guess what I've had more drop their price and sell to me than go online.

Actually that is a valid number and can give a pretty good idea of worth for a local face to face transaction. An internet sale is a whole other kettle of fish that usually involves shipping and FFL fees.

I agree that "local FTF" prices can be informative. I have purchased firearms FTF, from Dealers, and on line as I assume many of us have. While I prefer to see the gun in person, the choice locally is often limited or non existent for specific items. I appreciate access to the wider market. Also, it's interesting to see how prices vary from region to region for specific guns.

Why don't you buy it from your dad?
Give him what he paid for it plus $200 and a lunch at a local bar. I wish I had a dad who has guns.

Gunny4053 lives in my hometown in Eastern Idaho. I would say the prices are the same over here in Southwestern Idaho - if not a couple hundred more. Very nice.
