I have 2 .41 Magnums (a Model 58 and 657).
Why would I need a .44 Magnum? I have a short-barreled .44 Special (1991 CA Bulldog, 3" barrel).
Explain to me why I need a .44 Magnum. (I can't see the attraction).

I thought we had covered this before. "Need" is not a requirement for buying another gun.

Same
I am struggling with the same question. My Model 58 .41 Magnum is my favorite, but the Model 69 .44 Magnum is really tempting me......

You live in the Pacific northwest, where there are Sasquatchs. Buy the .44 mag, it might come in handy one day.

You guys know you want a S&W M29 6 1/2" barrel.
I have three other 44 mags, two s&w 41mag and still wanted dirty Harry's 44. I just wanted it.
We only pass this way once. Three years ago I had cancer. It's in remission. I'm ok for now. I wanted the 44 but it's in blue, I wanted it in nickel. So I'm going to have two.
My point is if you can afford it buy it.
The 44 in nickel is on my bucket list. With a few others. I flat out refuse to pass on to the next life without my bucket list complete. If I do pass on without my bucket list complete you will hear thunder over head like u never heard before. Trust me. Lmao
I'm sorry I like the m29/44mag.

Agree. Someone else may say "I have a .357 Magnum, why do I need a .41 Magnum?"
No one here can tell you what you need or don't need.

Perhaps another way to consider this is that if you think you want a .44 Magnum, you need one. The inner voice is wise....
Well, maybe yours is. Mine has led me down the path of multiple .38s. .22s, .41s, .44s, .45s...and some aren't S&Ws. I like 'em, 'tho

Need....maybe. More practical? Absolutely.
For my use, I prefer the 44 mag because I no longer reload. Factory ammo is routinely found at much more cost effective rates than .41 is.
One other thing is this...the 44 can do everything the 41 can do and one can almost always find ammo for it. Not bagging on the 41, my longest owned handgun is a m58 and love it, but I carry a m29 mg when home in the rockies. Another advantage...44 special ammo is super personal defense ammo and I find it all the time at a much lower cost than 41 -again.
The 41 mag is a fantastic round in it's own right though to be sure.
That's all for me.

'Cause...'Merica!
Now, if you had said, "I NEED to ream my model 58 to .44," that might have sparked a more "lively" debate

You don't! That's the wonderful truth of it. With the .41 Magnum, you've got all the horsepower you need.
Great caliber!

Actually you might want to ask yourself why you needed the .41's when you could have had the .44's. I've never been a .41 fan because of the versatility of the .44 and the option to shoot .44 special. Shoot what you like, and like what you shoot.

I have guided bear hunts for over 30 years the 41 mag will do everything that you need or what ever a 44 mag will do ,I now find there are a lot more small bullet manufacturers now and 41 mags are easier to find and a lot more ammo selection Colorado Customs is very good to any custom ammo and is cheaper and better most factory ammo.

As to the question posed by the OP, It jogged a question I have asked myself on more than one occasion.
Why do I need ( or want ) a 41 magnum????
See attached image;
29-2 Nickel 4 in.
29 no dash Blue 4 inch
29-2 Blue 6 1/2 inch.
So far, no 41 mag.

"I have two 41 Magnums..."
Yeah? Me too...
I also have two 44 Magnums...
Very few people need a 44 Magnum. Or a 41 Magnum for that matter. The 41 is just the 44 less about 15%. If this does what you need done then you're right, you don't need a 44. If one doesn't have either, and wants a big Magnum revolver, I recommend the 44 as being slightly more useful and easy to feed. But I always say buy what you want.

Might better go with a 460 or 500. Get the lead Squatch and the two or three behind him with on shot. In the meantime make up some stiff loads with hard cast boolits in the .41 and don't worry.

I have a nickel 57 and a blued 58 and they are both great. I like shooting the 58 so much I reload for 41 Magnum.
I also have a 5 screw Pre-Model 29 that I stumbled across some 20 years ago. I have shot it once. I have a nickel 29-2 with a 6.5" barrel and have shot it a few times.
Why would you need a 44 if you have a 41? If you don't reload, the factory load 44 ammo is cheaper and a lot easier to find than 41.

The only reason you might wan one is to round out the collection or take care of your Dirty Harry needs. I have three 44 Magnums, but they have not fired a round of ammunition in decades.
I use my 41 Magnums instead
With the 41s power and accuracy if you need more revolver, it is silly to go to a 44 Magnum when the 500 S&W Magnum is so versatile

Do you handload? I rarely see more than one type of 41 Mag on the shelf at local gun stores. They usually have several type of 44 Mag ammo.

Even though I have a plethora of .44's, my 58 would one of the last to go.
If you reload, one nice thing about 44spl & .41 is: an easy accurate plinking load for both is 7.5 grains of Unique with their respective cast swc bullets. Easy that I can leave the powder dispenser set up for both.
