Looks to me to be a Model 37 where someone bobbed the hammer. The "Airweight" says it is an alloy frame as opposed to the steel frame of the Model 36. But I could be wrong on this.....

Thanks for the info. Fair to say the box is not original with the chiefs special emblem?

Since it still has an upper sideplate screw, it was made a few years before the introduction of model numbers. Some would refer to it as a "pre-Model 37" but technically it's just a .38 Chiefs Special Airweight.

The box is of the correct style for the gun and has the appropriate end label. Look for the serial number in grease pencil on the bottom, which would confirm it is original to the gun. I think it is from about 1954 but someone may have an exact date for you.

It was also made prior to 1957.

Appreciate all the info, yes I found 52692 in grease pencil on the bottom of the box. Unfortunately not the correct box, but a box non the less

Your gun is a "Chief's Special Airweight". By the SN it was made in 1953. It is what it is, a "Named Model" revolver. There is no need to refer to it as a "Pre" anything, and definitely not by a model number that would not be assigned for another 4 years!
