Default I just purchased my first S&W revolver!

I walked into a local gun store without any intention to buy a firearm until I saw this beautiful 10-7 revolver that I am in love with. It looks like its in really great condition and the numbers under the grips match the frame, now I'm just wondering if it has been reblued. Went to the range after the purchase and was a lot of fun. Any info on this gun would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome! It doesn't show any evidence of a refinish in the photos, just the level of quality of a standard production gun of that era.

The 10-7 was made from 1977 to '88, and yours was from between '77 and about '81 due to the presence of the barrel pin where it threads into the frame. If you post the first part of the SN from the bottom of the grip frame (like 4D56xxx) we can let you know its production year.

Here are a "few" posts here about it:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/searchr...del+10-7&sa=Go

Hope this is helpful.

Definitely not refinished, a Mod 10, the mainstay of S&W. There's one reason that revolver has been in continuous production from 1899 to the present, "It's a great revolver".

Thanks a lot I really appreciate it!! The numbers below the handle start with 3D83xxx and the last digits match the numbers inside the grips so I know that it is a factory match!

Well I guess I can happily say that Im the first to fire rounds through this gun! There were no marks or residue on the recoil plate or anywhere on the cylinder before I brought it to the range, I'm extremely happy with this gun. Most likely not my last! Thanks for the info.

SCSW is a little sparse with that range, probably 1978-1979. Others are much more knowledgeable about the vagaries of shipments by serial number, and some here will have factory letters that can give a better idea. Hopefully they'll be around shortly. Very nice revolver.

Great find. You will be very happy with this pistol. Very accurate and the perfect barrel length. A lot less snappy. My father carried one when he was a Pinkerton guard.

Thank you! Feels great to be around a helpful community. Hope you enjoy your 10-6. I'm already looking at a pristine model 60 from the same local spot, just waiting for the lady to approve. I think I'm hooked!

Welcome to the forum. beware you have just entered the S&W Addiction Zone. Your life as you knew it is over. Your bank account will be strained but the guns you will have to show for it will be more than worth it all!! I started out with 1 gun a few years ago and within 7 months I had to buy a safe to keep them all in..
That is a very fine Model 10. Definitely not a refinish. Did it come with the original box and papers? A revolver that fine has spent all it life in a drawer somewhere. But you did the right thing by breaking it in at the range. That's what it was built to do.
BTW the barrel on most Model 10s and the SS 64s have heavy barrels...from that age on anyway. That's a "pencil" barrel or standard barrel or tapered barrel. A 10-8 from same time frame would have been a heavy barrel. S&W produced heavy and tapered barrels concurrently since 1957. The pencil barrels are more "retro" looking to the movies from the 1940s-1960s IMO. I prefer their looks and lines more than the HBs. Congrats on a great 1st S&W revolver. You couldn't have gone more "Classic"

A gorgeous specimen. I was telling a guy earlier today that I have had three S&W revolvers and two have gotten away from me. I told myself if ever I crossed paths with another one, it would be mine forever.

Mine's a 10-6 from December of 1969. I was born on 1/1/70, so it's about as close to a birth year gun as I could get.

That is a excellent start to a S&W collection, or as in my case, accumulation.

They are great guns and all the gun 95% of handgun carrying people would ever need. Unless you do something wrong, it will go bang every time you want it to and if you do your part will hit whatever you point it at.

Good guess. the SCSW 3d has the entire group of 3D numbers missing. According to Roy (private conversation) all the 3D numbers were issued in 1978.

Beautiful Model 10, there is just something about finely grained wood and blued steel. Especially when you pull it out of a nice gun rug at the range and you catch a plastic pistol pilot staring as you punch tight, six shoot groups. What a great cornerstone to your future S&W collection.

That is a proper first S&W revolver, if there ever was one. Wait until you pick up one of the N-frames.

Thanks for the info! It didnt come with the original box or papers but I did get it for what I believe is a good price of $400. I agree on the pencil barrel having a more retro or classic look but i would like to have a 10-8 also! Its great to know that I started my collection with this beauty, I'm definitely going to hunt down more!.

Welcome to the forum. You stated this was your first purchase and in my opinion you started with a great buy. You got the "bug" now.

My first was a pinned model 19 in 1972 now 15 Smith revolvers later I still need more.

Hope you more good luck

Welcome to the Forum! That's a great first S&W, and those are some excellent photos you took of it. It's a perfect example of the quality of finish that was once commonplace on a production revolver.

We'll need a range report next!

Beautiful revolver, mbliss is 100% correct, get ready to spend. Once you buy a revolver like the 10-7, and withs it's beautiful condition, you will want more. Has anybody just eaten 1 potato chip?
