My 2 new S&W revolvers
Hello all,
Been lurking around here for a while doing lots of reading.
I picked up a couple S&W revolvers from an old timer Bullseye shooter. Both these revolvers are in 98% or better shape.
I got a model 17-3, SN 1K9202x, 6 in. Blued. Target Grips. partridge front sight & adj rear. No box or paperwork. Need to know when delivered and if the hammer and trigger are target types? They are not .500 wide but narrower. what if any would be this models name??
The other revolver is a model 27-3, SN AUR197x, 6 in blued TH, TT of the .500 size, TG, partridge front, adj rear. same question here about delivery. I did get the box with this one.
Got his old pistol box and spotting scope, dies, some ammo and powder etc.
After the Army, I shot bullseye for the Colo National Guard -74 to 80 and the revolver shooters always amazed me. being a .22 Victor and 1911 shooter, I had to give them kudos for their wheel gun finesse.
Any info will be appreciated and maybe value guesses
Thanks

Your 17-3 is pretty much a standard model. Target H&Ts could be ordered with the unit but most of us were happy to get what we could get and then add the target H&Ts from a stocking dealer's accessory display. Then as now, the better Smiths were hard to get. Probably left the factory in 1971.
Your 27-3, while not as collectable as earlier models, is still a top of the line revolver and will probably be a great shooter. It is also pretty much what was standard for that model at that time. Probably shipped the first half of 1987. ( Info gleened for SCSW #2 as it is in the one in the computer room. Several folks on this board, with more knowledge than me, may add info to tighten the time frame)
If you were going to start a collection of shooter S&Ws you would be hard pressed to find better representatives of top of the line revolvers. (you done good!)

Welcome! You can post one each in the 1961-'80 and post-'80 sections, but you'll get answers if you put both in one...we're just that kind of people .

Sorry, couldn't resist. It's a common error. The Patridge sight is named for its inventor.
Two very nice pieces you picked up. Have fun and be safe.
Adios,
Pizza Bob

I have neither of those models - I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with them.

I have seen the term in many many postings and I never noticed. I would have said Partridge too. Wow...it's the little things...

I have a 17-3 too and love it. I always say mine is a model 17 when I get into a conversation. But in the book it would appear to be correct to call it a K-22 Masterpiece if you want to put a name to it...or tack driver works too.

Before 1958, the "Model 17" was called the K-22 Masterpiece. S&W revolvers had model names, not model numbers.
When the factory started putting model numbers on its products, following a directive handed down in the summer of 1957, the K-22 Masterpiece became the K-22 Masterpiece Model Number 17. The model numbers were added, they did not replace the names. Here's a picture that illustrates this on a Model 14.

so does the same apply to my model 27-3? What names are associated with it, or is it just a model 27?

GB,
as per your comment about, starting to collect, I hadn't thought much about it, But must be started though -Now have this 17-3, & the 27-3, a 29-2 - 8 3/8", a 29-2 - 6 1/2", and a 586 - 6". guess I have a small collection. Need 1 more a model 19 4" or 66 4" shooter - LOL!!! unless a pair comes along at a stupid low price - yeah right.
thank you
Roy
