Question about finding the correct serial number
Hello all
I am trying to find the correct serial number of a S&W Model 14 .38 revolver so that I can determine the date of Manufacture. There are two numbers on the yoke; R10641 and S 70742 S.
Any help and information would be appreciated.

Chances are the number with the S is the serial number, but that would make it an N frame. You can confirm by checking the number on the butt of the gun. You will find the correct serial number and letter prefix there

You may or may not have to remove the stocks to see it.

For the less experienced, you can generally disregard the yoke numbers.Always go by the number on the bottom of the grip frame, and include any letter prefix.

There is only one legal serial number on a S&W revolver, and that is the number on the butt!
There is only one S&W I am aware of that has a letter at the end of the serial number, and that is extremely rare. A few Model 39s were accidentally marked with the same serial number. When this happened am "A" was stamped at the end to differentiate them.
