Model 15-2 Production Year
Hey guys. I just picked up my Model 15-2 Combat Masterpiece with a 4" barrel, in near mint condition, and I'm trying to figure out the year of manufacture. The serial is K6633XX. I don't have the Smith and Wesson catalog, but hopefully someone can help!
Thanks in advance!
Phillip

Welcome to the FORUM! Good revolver choice too! I don't have a 15, but do have a 67 no dash. (stainless counterpart) You will enjoy it. We would enjoy pictures. Bob

Here's my Model 15-2 right after I picked it up from my FFL.
The previous owner, at some point in the last 50 years, installed a trigger shoe. After loading the cylinder full of snap caps and dry firing a bit, I discovered that I really like the trigger shoe, especially since this will be a shooter.
The stocks are made by Herrett's and obviously aren't factory, but *if* I was a right-handed shooter, they'd be pretty comfy. However, I'm a lefty and these are asymmetric, so I'm working to replace them with factory stocks.
So this leads to my next question. Now knowing that this 15 was made in 1966, which type of stocks would be the correct to purchase? Should I be looking for Diamond Magnas, or the later Magnas without the diamond?
Thanks again!
Phillip

It needs diamond Magna stocks with the tapered shoulder and squared off butt edges. They look like those on the top gun in this picture.

NICE 15!!! As stated, diamond magnas would be right, BUT if you wished, you could use diamond targets. It needs to feel good in your hand! Enjoy it! Bob

That is correct. Some Model 15-2 Combat Masterpiece revolvers shipped with target stocks. The one shown below did:

Those target stocks do indeed look really nice. I'll have to see if I can manage to win a set of them on eBay. I've bid on a couple of sets of the diamond magnas, but let's just say that there are some people with more cash in hand than myself!
Maybe I can find a set of the diamond target grips and get lucky. A "buy it now" set would be great to find!

Just to put it out there, if any of you guys have a correct set of diamond magnas you'd like to sell to put my 15-2 right, I'd be very interested in a set nice ones!

And here's mine that falls right between the two at K679XXX, with diamond targets,
target hammer and trigger, and trigger stop. I bought this one off a local "for sale" board.
It was the grips that first caught my eye.
It shows it's wear, but shoots just fine.

A few days ago I snatched up a set of nearly mint condition walnut diamond target grips for my 15-2, almost exactly like the ones on your 15-2. I probably paid way more than I should have, but to me it'll be worth it to have era-correct grips on my Combat Masterpiece.
I really like those target triggers and target hammers. Mine will definitely be a shooter, so I might look into those for mine.
Pictures of my 15-2 with the target grips to follow when the mailman delivers them!

And here's my 15-2 Combat Masterpiece again, with the set of diamond target grips that came in the mail today. Much better!
Not the best picture of it in the world. I'll try again when the lighting is a little better

Good looking grips...nice firearm!
This is my first post...be gentle...
I too just picked up a 15-2 but it doesn't have the wooden grips. It came with Pachmayr grips. I'd like to add some more classic looking grips. Any suggestions on which ones and how to locate / buy? Serial number of the 15-2 is K7263xx. Looks to be in pretty good condition. I think it's in the 1967 time frame...
Thanks!

Here's an updated picture of my Combat Masterpiece after I had a .500" target hammer and a smooth .312" trigger installed. The original trigger was the serrated .265" version, which wasn't exactly the most comfortable trigger to use after an extended amount of shooting. The wider, smooth trigger feels *much* better.
