Smith & Wesson 27-2 Grips
Hello, I just bought my first 27-2 with a 6" barrel. It has the .5" target hammer & trigger. The serial number is N4624xx. Would this be made in 1977 or 1978? Also, what style grips would have come on this? Magna, target, etc?
Thanks,
Bill

Top to bottom: Goncalo Alves, Rosewood, Walnut; should be one of these. Joe

In 1975, the 27-2s began shipping with target hammer, target trigger, target stocks and in the wood presentation case with a cleaning rod, brush and sight adjustment tool. Prior to that, they shipped with standard hammer & trigger, Magna stocks and in a cardboard box with tools in a plastic wrapper.
Yours probably shipped as you have it in a wood presentation case.

These look like good choices for you if you like target stocks. You could use magna style if they felt good to you. They are so easy to change, so whatever you like is fine in my book. Bob

My First post here, as I've been watching what you guys say about this and that, finally was rewarded with a find, (i hope) a new to me S&W.
That's a Nice set of grips there Pharmer. As mentioned, I recently acquired a S&W 27-2, only thing that bugs me is it has smooth, what I've been told presentation grips. I'd love to find a set target rosewood or any dark wood with a grain. Wanta trade? Then there's this understanding the difference between round butt and square, I'm thinking I know, but?? haha

Your 27-2 would have shipped with checkered target stocks made of Goncalo alves (standard for this model after September 1975).

J-K I also prefer checkered stocks for shooting but those smooth targets on your nickel 27-2 are just about the prettiest I have ever seen. You could sell those and buy a couple sets of standard targets if you want.

OP - Notice the football shaped indentation on the left grip? Those are the target grips for the 27-2. Just want to make sure you're aware because there are other grips that look similar but doesn't have that football indentation that do not belong on the 27-2 but it will fit because it's a N frame revolver.
I have an original 27-2 & it is the walnut target grips, the one at the bottom of pharmer's pic of the 3 revolvers.

Grips for my 27-2
Attached is a photo of my 27-2 with target grips. The revolver came with Nill-Griffe grips when I bought it. I was afraid to use them because they were in mint condition. I sold the Nill grips. I bought these grips for a good price. They may not be correct but look OK to me.
