Default Does it exist? J frame, 2-3", DA, no lock, steel, 38+P not .357?

I'd be interested in finding the following and wonder if S&W ever made one. If so could you provide a model number and dash number if applicable?

J frame
steel frame and cylinder
no lock
3-inch or shorter barrel
double action only (or shrouded/humpback DA/SA)
38 special rated +P (but specifically not 357 mag)
No grip frame safety

Would this be a model 49? Are there others?

Early model 60, if im not mistaken. Youd have to bob the hammer though.

The first generation 640s and 649s were DAO and 38 special. Not sure if they were officially rated +P, but being all stainless steel they would work with limited +P use.

There were model 40s which were similar, but blue steel.

Also, 649 and 49 in the early days were not 357 magnum. These were the shrouded versions with accessible hammers.

The models 40 and 49 stopped production before S & W gave the official blessing for +P .38 Special.

The 640 and the 649 (without a dash, in .38 Special; the -1s and later were all .357s) of the same era...you'll probably get different answers from factory customer service, depending on the person. Early 640s were engraved "Tested for +P+", and the 649 of the same era was built to the same specs, but the official answer these days would probably be no +P. The consensus is they are fine for at least limited +P, as Cal44 mentioned.

I've carried an early 640 etched "TESTED FOR +P+" for around seventeen years. Splendid DAO carry gun. Two-inch barrel.

Any 640 will handle +P ammo all day, but most people prefer to practice with standard pressure and carry the +P. You won't harm the gun with +P unless it shoots a little loose after many hundreds of rounds.

I have shot +P 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter ammunition in my mid-1980s Model 649 in .38 Special for familiarization and sight verification and that is what it is loaded with for carry use.

The 60-7 was the last mod 60 38 spl built on the old size J frame and
was rated for +P ammo due to internal upgrades. I bobbed the
hammer on mine so there's no worry about snagging it. It's easy to do
unless you're all thumbs in which case let someone do it who isn't.

"...specifically not 357 mag..."
I wonder, why eliminate the .357 J-frames from consideration?

Normally I might prefer a .357 frame because I like the added durability, but I like the idea of a frame tuned specifically for .38 spl, a caliber I really enjoy. For me fewer choices means fewer decisions to make, less mental burden and greater enjoyment. Then there's the crud ring thing, but I know that's highly debatable. I just like to keep it simple.

I'm not understanding the first gen 649 being DAO. Wasn't the 649, even no dash, a SA/DA (shrouded hammer)?

Correct, the 649 was SA/DA.

SC_Mike, that's a beautiful looking 640 hiding in the holster. I've always loved the 640 for its function and clean form.

I think I found me a 49 no dash. More details within a week or two.
