New stocks for 27-2 long barrel opinions wanted
I know that when it comes to stocks, it all boils down to personal taste. Thing is, I have noticed that my taste seem to be behind the curve. Example is the long barrel. Two years ago I thought they were awkward looking. Now, I really like them. I just bought a circa 1979 27-2 with 8 3/8 barrel on GB. Haven't taken possession yet, but I know that I am not crazy about the stocks. They seem to be short targets??? I really don't know what these are. Now I have decided on Culina for these stocks, so that narrows it a bit. I do want targets for shooting, but its the looks that I am most concerned about. So--smooth, checkered, ropers, wood type, etc.- help me with your opinions please.
Thanks

I like smooth targets with beautiful grain, especially on the long barrels.

Get the Kurac/Culina stocks and never look back, both looking and shooting. I have three sets, love them.

John Culina makes great grips and you can't go wrong with a set.

You did not say whether your 27-2 was nickel or blue finish. To me, that dictates what wood to use. John Culina has a fantastic woodpile (or can get what you want), so your choices are many! Smooth targets do show off the grain superbly.

Yeah, I should have told you that it is a blued gun. I'm leaning toward smooth but really can't decide type of wood. I really like the Coke shape but have never held one. My hand size is average and the regular targets feel a little large. Would cokes feel bigger? But still, type of wood and finish are my biggest concerns. I will be shooting it a lot but not compared to how many times I'll be looking at it and holding it while watching TV!!

Mine came with the S&W magna's that are still on the revolver. If I wanted to replace them, I would get smooth because they show off the wood grain better in my opinion.

You are correct about choice in stocks being personal. In 46 years of handgunning I have tried just about every type and style of stocks available for my S&W revolvers. After all those years I settled the factory original stocks as the most useful.
I prefer the Magnas on 4" and shorter guns and targets on 4" and longer. In other words, the 4" can go either way. I just look for ones with pretty grain and color.
The longer barrels in the tapered contour like the 27 are not too muzzle heavy at all.
I have one long S&W, a 27-2 in nickel. Wears some nice factory target stocks. All I need.

The smooth targets I have from Culina have felt large to me and I have had some beauties, but couldn't get a grip, so down the road they went. I have recently got some Eagle smooth targets in rosewood for the N frame and really like them. Check'em out on ebay.
