price for shooter grade 15-4/5
I found a 15-5 at a Gander Mountain, priced at $399. Pretty rough condition with a worn set of rubber grips. I have asked 2 employees and 1 manager about a reduced price and their response is they can't come down on the price-its set by corporate. It would be a shooter grade gun because condition is pretty rough and lots of blue wear.
So last night, just for giggles, I go to the website and the very same gun is listed for $299. Can be ordered and shipped to any GM store or FFL. since I'm going to be around the GM store this Saturday, I was going to stop in and ask for a manager and request a price match on the gun. I guess my question, is a shooter grade 15-4/5 a decent buy at $299? Definitely won't be much to look at, even cleaned up, but the one I've been looking at is nice and tight with good action.
Been looking for a nice clean model 15 for a while or even a 67 or model 10 w/H.B. Comments or advice?

It depends on how "shooters grade" it actually is, but if the M15 ain't real scruffy looking, and checks out well mechanically, I'd be all over it at $299. You'll probably never run across one cheaper than that, and you could get that money back out of it on Armslist without even trying.

It's a 4" model. I'm guessing 75% maybe, lots of blue wear, some light rust and possible pitting. I knew it wasn't a $400 gun, but I'll be a buyer at $299 no doubt :-)

Sounds like the one at Gander Mountain in Virginia. If it is ,it is in deplorable condition.I held out for a much better version ( 15-2 ) for about $550.00.

It must really be in bad condition. Still, I would buy it at that price, throw it in the back of my truck, and let it double-duty as a boat anchor when needed. It might even replace my current anchor if it's bad enough. The current one is over 100 years old. So, a nice/bad M15 would be an upgrade.

I got a 15-5 in a lot better cosmetic condition than what you're describing for $220 last year. I was really happy with it - until I shot a few cylinders full of rounds and discovered that one chamber had a longitudinal bulge inside that was splitting brass and causing them to stick in the cylinder.
But, thanks to the generosity and guidance of a couple of great members around here I got a used replacement cylinder for free and it was a drop-in replacement that I was able to swap without the need for any hand-fitting.
It's such a great shooter now that it gets to go to the range with me for a workout just about every trip I make!

Give it the lock-up , end shake test. Bring your own snap caps and get a feel for the trigger. If the 15 checks out mechanically buy it at $299 ; you will not be sorry. I bought one at that price about 6 months back. Disassembled , cleaned & lubed the internals , Flitzed & oiled rubbed the externals ; best shooter for the dollar I ever bought.
Good luck!

I must correct myself. I believe that my shooter/project 15 cost me $199 , not $299. That said , it is very rare to see a S&W model 15 dash anything in the range you are considering.
Get it if it checks out.

Cabela's has a 64-2 @ $459 in very good condition, is that in the ball park for this model? Seems a little high to me.

I agree, a little too high. I just saw a Model 64 (dash something, I forget) this afternoon for $399 at my local gun shop. I didn't examine it closely, but it looked to be in very good shape. And I'm not sure that price is anything to brag about.

Check and see what is listed on GunBroker just as a sanity check. It would also be good to see what a few sold for in the last 6 months or so. The pictures should give you a good visual comparison but no mechanical. You would have to rest on seller's description.

Just last year a friend and I went to
Our local shop ( likely the last big gun shop in New York State !) I had mentioned to the owner we would each like to buy a 4" 15. He said let me see what I have- he brought out about 8 of them, and told us take your pick 300 bucks each out the door. I ended up with a pre 15 from about 1955 in 80% condition, my friend a 15-2 in about 95%.
Since I have moved out west where demand is much higher I have scarcely seen a used revolver to
Look at!

$375 OTD got me this 15-4 a couple of months ago:
If the $399 one looks worse than that, personally I'd pass.
