Default Possible Trade 28-2 Worth?

I have an as new in box 28-2 6". No turn line and has all papers as well as wax paper. No tools. I have mostly S&W's but I am interested in an as new in box Browning Hi-Power in 9mm. It is a Belgium built model. The asking price is $950.00. This LGS is a small one man shop that I have made a few purchases but never a trade. Not really sure what my Highway Patrolman is worth? What does the membership here think? Thank You, Brian

I would guess it would retail in the $750-850 range. But the LGS won't give you nearly that much. You would be lucky if they gave you $400 IMO. They got to make a profit too and they will want to double their investment most probably.

Just because he wants $950 for the Hi-Power doesn't mean it is worth that. If I really wanted it...and wanted to trade instead of buy, I would offer him a straight up trade. Your gun for his. If he declines pick yours up and head for the door. If he has any sense he won't let you leave with your gun.

Your market/location plays a big roll here IMO.....

Around here the first question the stores usually ask is "What do you want to get out of it?"........

Here in W.Pa. your 28 package at a small local gun shop might be listed at $700....... with the shop wanting to be into it for less than $500.

It's a "collectors package" ..... so how much traffic does the shop get...how long will the owner have to have his $$s tied up in inventory? He might be able to flip a shooter grade gun faster and make $200.

That said.... some shops have "customers" they can call and sell a collectible to in 30 minutes.

IMO based on my market a rural small LGS is going to want to make $300-400 on the two guns......closer into "The Burgh" $400-500.

Maybe sell it on consignment; around here that gets you 85-90% of the sale price.

Just my opinion here: I would not do that trade, no matter how badly I wanted the Browning.

Matter of fact, I'd hang on to that 28-2, period. I don't care what everyone else says about the 4-inch 28s being more "valuable" or "collectible". ANIB 28-2s with original box and papers are so scarce around here, they're almost never seen, no matter what barrel length they are. That gun would bring a premium price around here.

I'm with Watchdog. Around here in gun heavy central Virginia I would be standing in line, probably number 50 or so, and that's if I got there early to buy your 28-2 in that unfired condition with docs, box.

The very, very few 28's that are found around here are gone within 30 minutes or less. Like other OP said...the LGS (2 right here that I know personally)...maintain a list of S & W nuts (like me) and usually a gun doesn't even make it to the showroom case in a condition like yours.

Browning HP's? again around here $700 tops for good condition assembled in Portugal, all Belgium? I have seen several but none topping $900 and that is usually Out the Door.

Just my two cents.

If by "Belgium built" you mean it was assembled in Belgium (versus Portugal) and is ANIB, $950 sounds like a very good price. Most of those I see these days, and rarely one with box, are $1000/$1100. As most places I shop expect to negotiate a bit the LGS is probably willing to accept $900 or less. As to value of the 28-2, the previous estimates of $700-$800 sound about right where I shop (recently traded for one pretty much as you describe that was priced at $750). As others have said, buying the Browning and keeping the 28-2 is a great way to go. If you can't keep both, make the best deal you can for the Browning and sell the 28-2 here, on GB, or even a gun show. Good luck.

Thanks guy's. Great opinions and I appreciate that. I will keep the Highway Patrolman. I may just make a straight up cash offer on the Browning? Brian

I think that's a very smart idea. That is one really nice looking 28 you have there and even though I don't collect model 28's, I wouldn't mind owning yours one little bit.

You have a fine looking 28! I have a 6" no dash from 1960. No box or extras. Nothing yet has tempted me to get rid of it. Bob
