Default Model 15 Date Check

I'm looking at a nice 4" model 15-3 and I'm trying to figure out if it's old enough to be C&R. Serial number is K996628. If anyone can give me a year of manufacture, it would be appreciated.

Yep, K946,382 – K999,999....1970. It's a few years shy of being a C&R.

Just in case you need convincing: K9925XX, one of my favorites with a million miles on it. Joe

Joe, I also was offered a 15-3, do you mind what kind of price they are asking in your next of the woods. I didn't get a price yet from the seller, but was wondering what price range yours is ?

Thank You, Brian

Mine with s/n K 905XXX dates to 1969...still no C & R, but was in the $400 OTD range several years back, at least here in central VA.

I would suspect if your appraisal eyes show anywhere near 90% with factory stocks, the $500 - $ 550 OTD would be my guess.

Good luck with your search and post pics when and if you do get one. Like other posters have said...my 15-3 with 4" is one of my favorites too.

They wanted $425. It was in very nice (shooter) condition. It was well worth the asking price.

There are no gun shops in DC, so as a DC resident I pay a $125 transfer fee to the one and only FFL in the District. By the time it shipped + xfer, I'd have been pushing $600. C&R guns are a "game changer" for my situation.

I recently traded away my super-clean 15-4 (1980), and then got to missing it so bad, within a few weeks I finagled a deal to get it back!

Just curious; how is it possible that there is only one FFL in DC?

Although, DC is only slightly left of Mass and CA. Our gun "rights" have done OK recently because of few key court wins. So, not only is there just one FFL, his office is in Police HQ. DC hasn't legislated against FFL's, but they have basically zoned them out of existence. In fact, the FFL office in police HQ basically needed a zoning "waiver" to comply (1000' from a school, church, gov't building etc...) I suspect that nobody has challenged this because the DC gun market is too small and the ROI probably isn't there (especially if you factor in a legal battle that might take years).

I was fortunate enough in January, 2017, to win a bid on GunBroker (GB) on a 1980 vintage 15-4 "safe queen" in excellent condition, target trigger and target hammer, with box and all papers, but no tools. I won with a bid of four (4) C-notes. Pretty pleased with my "Combat Masterpiece." It's one of S&W's "All Time Great" revolvers. The Combat Masterpiece was sure carried in the holsters of a lot of law enforcement officers.

Here's my beauty:

Thanks for looking.

God bless,
Birdgun

With the box and papers, and in that condition, I'd say you did pretty well Birdgun. About 4-5 years ago, I got basically the identical pistol (low miles, 1980 dash4 in 95% condition) but no box or papers, from Summit Gunbroker for $380. I was and still am happy with the deal, but factoring in all the relevant.....factors, I think you did even better.
Mine currently has some sweet Herrett cocobolo target grips that I got cheap from CDNN a few years back. It's nice to still have the factory grips, but these target grips look and feel considerably better. They have a discernably positive affect on shootability and accuracy.
