Another 28-2 photo just for fun
I am social distancing so decided to try a photo. Here is a 28-2 I picked up...looks to be unfired outside of factory. No box, papers, etc.

You have a good eye! I just extended the deck and am waiting for some non-rainy days to paint it.
I ordered a holster for this gem just the other day. I have an old Bianchi "Hurricane" basket-weave holster from my ancient police days, but that thing is just awful.

That's a very nice 4" M-28. Your Target stocks turned out perfect.
I only have one M-28, a 6" dash two from 1978.
It was shipped Dec 1978 wearing these Magna grips.
It has spent the vast majority of its life wearing these Pachmayr grips.
These are my shooter grips.
I tried on a pair of S&W Smooth Target Stocks.
Then a nice set of S&W Combat Stocks.
I ended up keeping this set of S&W Target Stocks.
This is how it rests on my nightstand.
Resting in the holster that it has spent its entire life in.
I've been shooting this since my brother bought it new.
This was my rabbit hunting gun.
I've shot this more than all my other guns combined.
My brother gave it to me back in 2014 and told me that I am the only one who had ever shot it.
Its a keeper.

It will not be a gem for long if it spends any time in a holster. If you can afford it, buy a shooter and keep that one as is.

Well, this 28-2 was a very good price. I will likely carry my 27-3 4" much more anyways; it has plenty of holster wear from my LE days.

Those magnas have really nice figure in the wood. I don't think I've ever seen any that nice.
Rabbit hunting.??? Are you sure you have enough gun there?
Coming from your brother makes it a forever keeper, IMHO.

That is a very nice looking example. I have a soft spot for M28's, and always have an eye open. All of these came from forum members. All S prefix. One I believe is once fired, and one 6" is new. Culina grips from Rubi, dated 2007

No sir, found this one at a gun show in Knoxville awhile ago. It had the red insert when I bought it. The thing looks like it may have had 50 rounds through it.

Love these 28's by the way. I'm still hoping to find a nice shooter 4" someday. My ND 28 is a 6"er, and has gone through the same series of stocks, plus some white G10's and a T-grip. Ended back up with the,........... uh,......... shoot! I can't remember what I had on it last.
Guess I better dig it out and shoot it to see.

Years ago S&W would make modifications to guns for a low cost, and if you were LEO, they would generally do it for nothing. Maybe a couple bucks for the parts. Living in RI, and being LEO, I used to drive 90 miles to the factory, walk in, see a service manager, give him the gun(s), and tell him what I wanted.
I would take some time and look at the factory collection on display, go get lunch, and then go back and pick up my gun(s). Anything from red ramp to trigger/hammer changes and action jobs.
Those were the days

Pete-The letter on my NYSP 28-2 says target options (rr/wo/tt) were added to those guns after they left the factory which I found interesting.

Here's a 1st year (1954) Highway Patrolman. I have the numbered stocks, but it shoots so much better with the Herrett's Jordan Troopers.

Thank you.
They were in a ziplock bag marked for this gun.
He put the Pachmayrs on after I had only used it a couple of times. He said they were better suited for what I was using it for. It still had them on it when he gave it to me.
They were Killer Rabbits like the one in Monte Python and The Holy Grail.

Nice arctic camouflage there! Are they bone or stag? (I'd ask the I word, but I think it's illegal nowadays)
They really jump out against that semi-flat dark finish.

This too is an early N serial, N124xx. It's never had any glamour shots...but 28-2s never really were runway models. They only seem pretty now because most modern handguns are ugly...

Really like those target grips.
The attraction to me for the M28, is that they are designed to be a working class gun, besides being a M27. They are tough, and full of craftsmanship

Those are smooth elk antler or what i refer to as “American ivory”. I like them and have them on quite a few of my revolvers. Those are for a round butt revolver, obviously. Back in the 80s I did a bit of work on that 28-2 including rounding the grip frame. In hindsight, wish i would have left it alone. But, all is not lost! I have RB/SB conversion magnas as seen on the stainless version of that revolver.

My 1956 HP
I may be the 3rd owner, although there's no way to prove that, both previous owners have passed on.
When I got it there were pachymer grips on it, I found this later set in a bin at a local gun shop.

I've owned several 28's over the years and still have this one. It's an "S" s/n from 1966/67.
Right here it's wearing a set of Altamont "Cokes" but grips get switched around from time to time.

That looks familiar! The one in my post above has the rounded grip frame also. At the same time, I converted it to 45 ACP.

Very nice piece. Not sure why mine doesn't shoot 44 Special yet, but I have plans to fix that.

FROM WIKI..
Wesley Grapp served as head of the Los Angeles Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) office. He was the agent who carried out Hoover's orders to give FBI information to University of California senior regent Edwin W. Pauley. Pauley allegedly had a history of political connections with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), forerunner of today's CIA, as well as a close association with Will Jenkinson, who was later to serve as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, (1953–1961).
Grapp left the FBI in 1972 and headed security for Flying Tigers Airlines.
