I Inherited my Dads K22
I inherited my Dads Smith & Wesson K22. I couldn't find all the items it came with. I'm trying to bring it back with all the original items that came in the box when new. Here is what I have so far. Please give me any direction, ideas and or information to what I'm trying to accomplish.
Thanks

1. Box is correct for that gun. Is the serial number grease penciled on the back?
2. The stocks and the gun appear to be a correct match. The right panel stock should have the serial number stamped or penciled inside on the flat surface.
3. The helpful hints are correct.
4. The manual is for a later model marked gun. Yours is not a model marked gun.
5. The cleaning kit is also a later set. The SAT (sight adjusting tool) should be a nine row knurled black (dark blued) handle with a black oxide shaft. The mop and brush are later period and should have brass attachments and not the aluminum ones shown. The cleaning rod should be black.
6. The vapor paper is correct. Good to have that with the set.
The whole package is in really nice shape for that period and you should be happy to have it.

bdGreen,
Thanks a bunch for the information. I'll try to find those suggestions. Or do you know anyone that will trade my items for the year correct ones? According to S&W they said the gun is a 1955. I don't have the gun here so I can't confirm if the number is stamped or penciled, to my reculation it is stamped under/in front of the cylinder?
I don't know what you mean by not a model marked gun?

1. The 'K22 Masterpiece' is the name given to that handgun by the factory. It is as written on the box. A couple of years after yours was manufactured S&W assigned model numbers to their guns. Yours would become the Smith and Wesson Model 17, K22 Masterpiece.
2. Your K22 Masterpiece is known by collectors as a five screw model. Four screws on the side plate and one screw on the front of the trigger guard. One side plate screw is hidden under the grip panel.
3. That year model gun has five locations where the serial number is marked.
a. On the butt of the gun.
b. On the flat of the barrel underneath where the ejector rod is.
c. On the face of the cylinder.
D. On the right grip panel.
e. On the face of the yoke, fairly hidden by the position of the cylinder.
4. All the serial numbers will begin with a capital 'K'.
Again, that is a very desirable model to shooters and collector's alike. You have a jewel of a S&W product.

Congratulations. I like those K-22s a lot. Your Dad left you one in great condition. With proper care and storage, you may be handing that down one day yourself. Good username, btw.

Your doing good. My dad left his 1947 K-22 to me. The stocks match and he had a set of "oyster" stocks as well. The box is original as well. Not sure about the cleaning stuff he had. No SAT unfortunately.

I believe you missed one. The number should also be on the underside of the extractor star.

Here is a photo of the correct screwdriver (SAT). It is the one on the left.

Thanks a bunch for the photo. Now I know what to look for. Do you want to trade my new SAT that's in my photo above. If not would you sell yours??? Thanks again.

JP@AK,
Again thanks for the information & the photos. Both helped me a lot. I just found/bought a nine row knurled black SAT, Thanks. Now I just need the black cleaning rod and a mop & brush with brass attachments. And an older manual, I don’t know what the mop, brass brush & manual look like? Does anyone have photos of the proper ones?
Just wondering if this would be an option? Take the cleaning rod and cold blue it or cold black? Would that make it the same as original?
And again thanks to all who chimed in. Greatly appreciated. Keep it coming.

To the best of my recollection the hooked rod, mop and wire brush came with the revolver. I can remember shooting that gun when I was five and those items were in the box at that time. And they still are. I do not know where the long rod with the wood handle came from but it is very old as well.

I bought this Vintage Factory NOS Original Smith Wesson 22 Cal S&W 6" Cleaning Tool Kit SAT. eBay (332297129966) that I thought would match the OEM Cleaning Kit for my gun. I paid $77.56. Now I find out this purchase has NO parts that are OEM for my gun. If anyone has the black cleaning rod and brass brush, please send me the information. I feel like I'm letting my father down. I really need to complete this set. THANKS TO ALL who has helped. Have a great day.
