Default New 3" Model 36

I won this flatlatch 3" Model 36 last week on GB. I've been looking for a J frame in .38 Special, the bidding was still kind of low with only a day or two left, so I put in a bid that lasted. It didn't look too good in the pictures, but it was a flatlatch so I knew I could get it with a C&R FFL. The stocks, although they were targets, were modified for speed loaders. The description said it needed a good cleaning. The first patch through it got only dust, no oil or carbon. Even with Hoppes 9 there was still very little carbon in the barrel and cylinder, but no pitting. It cleaned up very nice and I put another set of targets I had on it. The serial is 3402XX, which puts it at about early 64 I believe. Any discoloration is from the lighting at my workbench.

Great gun! You did well! I have a 1968-ish 3" model 36, and it's an amazing shooter. Also, I put a set of those same J frame target grips on a 2" model 36 that I have, and think they may be the most comfortable set of grips I have. At least for my hand. Congrats!

Nice score. A 3" 36 is one of my quests but they don't come up often here.

Nice catch!

I sure like it with those targets on it. Maybe one day I'll stumble upon a nice pair for my 1976 36-1.

Hi VNK971,

Congratulations. You've done exceptionally good. The Model 36 is an extremely popular CCW handgun.

I walked in to a gun shop last Friday to browse. We all know how that turns out. Well, in a display case was an early 80's 2" Model 36. As soon as it was in my hands I knew I had to have it. It appeared to be in good condition. It locked pretty darn close to perfectly tight. You know the rest.

I called Smith & Wesson. A tech told me that I could send it to S&W for a thorough going over. The bluing was in good condition with minor holster wear near the muzzle. The S&W tech told me that as long as the bluing is in good condition to leave it as is. I probably will send it to S&W for winger treatment.

I might wind up carrying it, although I'm not comfortable with the .38 Special, even the FBI Load. But the Model 36 is the definitive snub nose. The reality is I don't normally carry a handgun even though I legally can. I live in a very safe city, and I'm pretty darn good at avoiding bad guys.

I live in the totalitarian state of CA, so I can't pick it up until a week from Saturday.

VNK971, I hope your new Model 36 brings you many, many years of enjoyment.

Some guns have the cool gun look. The Model 36 has an exceptionally cool gun look.
