A friend from many miles away called to tell me he picked up a 4” Model 13-2 in great condition, on the back strap it is stamped Maryland State Police, said the serial number range is in the 700,000. He has no idea, nor do I of any historical information concerning when the Maryland state police had these in use.

Will some of the gang here enlighten us on this Kframe ? Thanks a bunch...

I can't tell you anything about the Maryland SP, but the Model 13-2 was made from 1977 until 1982. So there is the time bracket for this gun.

The Model 13 was introduced in 1974, as a result of a special order by the NY State Police for a fixed sight K frame revolver that chambered the .357 Magnum. That order was filled by producing Model 10-6 revolvers fitted with counterbored cylinders reamed for the magnum cartridge. 1200 of them were shipped to NY. Others were made and sent to distributors.

This modification of the 10-6 was popular and was requested by the FBI, subsequent to its use by the NYSP. At that point, S&W decided to give it a separate model designation. It became the Model 13-1 (there was never a Model 13 with no dash number).

Edited to add: Orders from the NYSP, subsequent to the original order, were filled with the Model 13-1. So, both Model 10-6 in .357 Magnum and Model 13-1 revolvers saw service in NY.

Your friend was lucky to grab an MSP revolver with their initials on the back strap. I have a 6" 1957 Colt OP that was an MSP issue duty pistol. The Colts preceded the Model 13's. I bought it in 1975 when they surplussed them out. They ground the MSP off the revolver before they sold them to a local dealer. Hope that helps with the yearly range of the S&W which was replaced by the Beretta 92 sometime in the 80's.

Just talked to my friend again concerning his 13-2. He stated it is marked on
the back strap with full text Maryland State Police along with a 3 digit number.
Grips are some sort of after market grips, believe he said Pachmayrs.

I have a Model 13-3 nickel plated 4" barrel. Also have the original wooden grips, box, receipt and all paper work that came with it. Does anyone have any info on the history of this revolver?
