Default Target Grips vs Altamont Cokes vs Altamont Ropers on K Sq Butt

I have been trying out various grips (stocks) on my 18-2 which has a square butt. I have tried old style Targets with speed loader cutouts, Altamont Cokes, and Altamont Roper. I like the Roper the best so far.

Attached are some pixs showing the grips on the gun. In each pix, one grip is on one side and a different grips is on the other. This gives you an idea of both their size and how the grips differ in their placement on the butt.

The 1st pix shows the Coke grips on the left side and the Targets grip on the right. The 2nd pix shows the Roper grips on the left side and the Targets grip on the right. The last pix shows the Roper grips on the left side and the Coke grip on the right.

You can see how the grips compare in how they sit on the butt. You can also see the shape of the grips from the back.

The Ropers are longer than the Targets and the Cokes. Plus they are cut further away from the trigger guard as well.

The Cokes are also longer then the Targets and are cut further away from the trigger guard than the Targets.

You can also see the "Coke bottle" shape (the palm swell) compared to the Ropers and the Targets.

Lastly you can see that the Targets are thicker than either the Ropers or the Cokes.

Beautiful, I would be happy with any of them on any of my guns.

I put a set of the Altamont Coke grips on my full lug Model 14. I really like the look and the feel of the grips. I’ve been ordering different styles of Altamont grips for a few of my revolvers and have never been disappointed. I do however always keep a set of the original grips for each gun. They all look great on your 18!

I'll say one thing you certainly have deep pockets. Might I suggest, you spend some of your
money on different brands and types of ammo and find out which suits your particular revolver?
Not my business you understand.

Haha That is good advice S.B. I’ve only bought a few of them and they are on a couple of my nicer guns. I’ve been lucky with my revolvers and most of them aren’t too picky about ammo. I don’t competitively shoot with them though.

I just put a set of walnut Altamont Ropers on my Model 14-3 converted to 16-3. They look pretty good from the side, but I would observe that if they were "perfect" (for me at least) they would have some of the coke bottle profile. In addition, the edges, especially in the arch behind the trigger, could be rounded a bit more. They have the basic concept of the original Ropers, but lack the details that give them the soul. Are they worth the price? Indubitably. Would I pay a bit more for the details? Youbetcha!!

I agree with Green Frog. Also, I prefer oil finish instead of the shiny plastic coat look.

Update to my previous; I sent an e-mail to Altamont to find out whether they would be willing to alter their standard to be closer to what I wanted. Their answer was an unequivocal "NO." They don't do special orders. As I said, the ones they sell are good and I am glad to have them. I just feel a little frustrated to be so close to perfect and not make the additional step. Somebody said, "The perfect is the enemy of the good." and now I guess I know what they meant.
