grip suggestions for engraved guns

When you say factory contours, are you talking target or service?
I guess you want to stay with a darker color by going to french walnut. Culina has more wood choices I believe.

Below is exhibition grade dark cocabolo on a 17-3. Uncheckered and no medallions. I do not put medallions on non factory grips. This was a rare piece they had. If you want light, I would go with figured Italian olive wood. But i would check with Jennifer at Culina for pics of grips they have made

Get KB to make you a set of stocks out of Holly wood. They will age just like ivory for a fraction of the price.

Pete, beautiful grips. I need one of each. The 19 is engraved to the borders of service stocks. The 29 is engraved to the contours of Target without recess. The pictures show the grips original to the gun although it had some finger groove smooth combat when I bought it. The 19 also had finger groove smooth combats which covered some of the engraving. I just bought a pair of stags for the 19 but I am thinking a about French Walnut or a lighter colored wood like Holly for the 29. I like medallions even in non factory. Thanks for the input! If I dont come up with something I will be ordering from Keith or Culina.

Now that is what I call a first world problem :). I would also vote for lighter colored stocks. Good luck in your decision.

French would typically be one of the lighter color woods. For a blued gun, I would prefer the contrast over the darker species.
I agree-Smoothies wouldn't detract from the engraving. I would give the nod to Keith Brown's, if I wanted checkering.

If you are thinking a lighter wood like Holly, I suggest that you look at the Italian olive. Below are some on a 15-2. You can get some figure, and they will take on a nice slight yellow hue in time. These are just waiting for a M66 someday. These are Culina. if you want a light and dark mix, black and white ebony as shown on the 629.

BTW, nice guns!!!! Factory engraving?

Pete those are very nice. I like both.

The engraving is non factory done by Vasco Revera. An Italian engraver who engraved a lot of Italian shotguns and some S&W's. Factory letters are next. I have about 5 that I need to letter.

I have found factory Brazilian rosewood stocks look best on engraved S&Ws, or smooth stocks made of Goncalo alves.

IMO the stocks should compliment the engraving in a way that does not distract the eye or detract from the engraving.
But the material or wood is really a personal preference. One of my favorite "'eye grabbers" is a ANIB 4" 586 factory round butt wearing Spegel extended Boot grips in birdseye maple.......

See RKmesa's thread "Screaming 27-2" ...... last post on the thread; yesterday morning around 9am.
