AMPERSAND
I just got a 19-3 4" with the ampersand being an 8c on the barrel.
Is this a replacement barrel as the lettering looks a little different and shallow on that side.
It reads SMITH 8c WESSON. The other side is correct.
Any info would help.
Thanks

Not sure what the "C" indicates but my 19-3 reads S&W .357 Magnum on the barrel.

It's an ampersand. There have been several variations of the font throughout the years . . .

My 2 k ser.# 19-3 at first glance I thought it was &, closer look shows 8c. I know for sure that the barrel is original.

If the OP's model 19 has the barrel rollmark as pictured above, it is factory and normal. However, it does not read "Smith 8c Wesson" any more than it reads "5mith & We55son", just a matter of font style.

Information on how something looks might be more forthcoming if we could look at it.

It’s one of the methods used to make an ampersand. It uses and “8” and a “c” to make it.
I did it in the 80’s with screen printing in school.
My 4” 19-3 is a “Smith 8c Wesson” too.
My 4” 66 No Dash is a “Smith & Wesson”.

Funny how two people can look at the same thing and see something different.
I have always seen and looking at the photo in post #4 still see a &
The OP sees 8c
I guess everything depends on how you look at it....that's weird !

Comparing my two 4” examples up close may help to illustrate the difference between a scrunched together “8c” and an “&” ampersand.
