In a revolver, it is a .44 Special by a wide margin.

I will give it a year to see what happens. Should I switch back, it will most likely be a S&W 640 .357, or my grail gun, a 640 no dash .38 special if I can find one.

My first EDC was a 640-1 .357. Now my EDC is a 642-1 .38 Special +P
My first "EDC" semi was a Glock M36 .45. I didn't like the feel of it and it had a jaming problem so I gave it away.
I love my M&P .45 but its too big and too heavy to be my EDC.

Hadn't thought about it, but I guess it's .38 Special.
Unless we're including rifle calibers, then it's easy, 7.62x39, because my favorite gun in the world is my AK.
So fun, dependable, and consistently shoots 2-3" groups at 100 yards with iron sights, and I'm not even that great of a shooter!

It would have to be .38 or .44 Special for me. Easy to reload and easy to tailor loads.

I've fired more rounds of 22 LR through handguns than any other caliber, and it would certainly be a sentimental favorite, but if I had to choose a single revolver to be my only handgun (and could hand load) I would have to go with the 327 Fed Mag. I can put so many different rounds in so many different weights and power levels into this flexible chambering, it has to be my all time favorite, and of course brass would never be a problem because I could comfortably utilize 32 S&W and H&R if for some reason I couldn't get FM brass.

In a revolver, without a doubt, the .44 mag. A handloaders dream, mouse fart to moose loads, all out of one gun. And oh yea, I have killed both a mouse and a moose with a .44 mag six gun....

This is my 627-2. Is this a McGivern gold front bead sight??
This is my only pistol with that particular front sight.

.550. Most call it 28 gauge.
I rather like .38 Super and .44 Special, too.

Yes, that is a McGivern gold bead - rounded surface. A Call gold bead is flat.

Today's choice(favorite of the day) and wear was my 38-44. I carry it in a Bianchi Cyclone cross draw.

My Favorite caliber
IMG_0076.jpgTypical shooting day. Grabbed a couple revolvers and headed out.
M28 for .38 Special and .357 Magnum
M29 for .44 Special and .44 Magnum
And 2 more .22
H&R M999 for .22 LR
Ruger Single Six for .22 WMR
Hard to pin down favorite caliber but I probably shoot these the most.

I probably have more 357 magnum chambered guns but my favorite by far is the 44 mag. Everything I have shoots it good and out of a Rossi 92 it’s a blast

I like both my 357 and 44 magnum.if I could only have one it would be the 357 simply because I can if need be shoot it fair one handed the 44 mag not so much. For centerfire rifle I would go with my Remington 700 SPS in 300 blackout with my silencer and Leopold scope loaded properly it is very quite and out to 300 yards or so very accurate and effective on any game around here ,if I lived in big bear territory I would go heavier obviously or move . For a only 1 gun situation I would go with Remington 1100 12 ga magnum I have put more meat on the table with it than any other firearm plus my eyes aren’t as sharp as once were .With proper ammunition it works for any thing on this continent at proper shotgun ranges with a rifled slug barrel it is effective out to 150 yards ,a better shot could probably do better but that is my limit shooting at game .Plus I wouldn’t feel under gunned in a self defense scenario with it .

I hunt furry and feathered critters so first would be a Shotgun 12 gauge (ducks, Turkey, Pheasants and Quail) second 270 Win and 44 Mag (deer) next .22LR and 17 HMR (plinking) and a .45 ACP for ringing dinging steel.

38 SPL, but in the last 2 years 44 SPL is giving it a run for the money in my shooting.
For semi autos definitely 9mm.

My favorite is a toss between a 44 spcl and 45 Colt.
Just like those big slugs at moderate velocity.
I own far more 38/357 just because of the large diversity of guns available chambered in those two cartridges.

Well you have to have a 10/22. Everyone has to have a 10/22. Last night I just put one of those fore end lasers on my wifes stainless 10/22 takedown. It was too cheap not to. Haven't zeroed it yet. Already has a nice quick detach scope. I have one of the old cheap classic type 10/22s, nothing fancy like hers. I actually prefer the bolts. I've had a 17 for nearly 40 years and a 552 about the same. Had a Nylon 66 originally but gave it away on the spur of the moment never thinking they'd become appreciated. Shot plenty or rabbits as a kid with a single shot bolt. Brother has that one but I do have one of it's brothers.
I guess I shouldn't have posted here as my 17 is early 80s and not pre 80s. Sorry.

You can post anything you want in any of my threads.
Mine's an early '70s - I think. Nothing fancy and its probably had about 8 million rounds go thru it.
I seriously considered keeping this K-22 but let it go.
I'm sure there was another M27 that I wanted more.

Rifle 308 finally knocked off King 30-06 because of scout rifle, target rifle and semiauto BUT if I was going to just have one rifle it would be a 30-06. I love my Ruger Scout rifle but it isnt as good of a hunting rifle as a quality 30-06 bolt action rifle. Honorable 1st runner up 22LR.
Revolver what a can of worms. Love 45 Colt but a 45 Colt carry gun is big so 38/357 has to get the nod as most useful Honorable mention to 44 Mag and Special and again 22 LR
SEMI 45 ACP in a 1911. Beats out 9mm because double stack 9mm where I think 9mm is most useful get as big and thicker than a 1911. For instance my 439 is about as big and heavy as a LW Commander size 1911. The double stack S&W miniguns are great but don't feel good in my paws. My hands love the feel of a HP but I don't shoot them as well as I do a 1911. Huge honorable mention to 22LR.
Finally if you don't hunt there is a lot to be said for a 223. Inexpensive practice ammo. Almost as cheap as 22LR IF you handload. Enough for personal defense. Easy for beginners to shoot bc low recoil. Lots of platforms available and accurate out to decent ranges in accurate rifle.
If I could only have 3 flavors of ammo but multiple firearms, they would probably have to be
22LR
357 Mag
308

Today, my favorite caliber is .45 Colt. I have two S&W double-action revolvers in .45 Colt and both are a joy to shoot. A fun cartridge at the range and a serious cartridge for home defense.
S&W Model 625-9 "Mountain Gun" in .45 Colt.
S&W Model 25-5 "Black Beauty" in .45 Colt.
Thanks for looking at my 45's.
God bless,
Birdgun

I have a soft spot for the .38 S&W, such as used in the Terrier and the WWII Commonwealth service revolvers (Webley Mk IV, Enfield #2, Victory).

Based both on number of firearms that will chamber the round & what always finds its way into my range bag ...
I'd say that it has to be .38 Special
.38 Military & Police (pre-Model 10)
K-38 Masterpiece (pre-Model 14)
Model 15-2
Model 36-7
Model 60
-also-
Model 13-4
Model 19-4
Model 686-6+
... and ...
Armscor M206
Henry Big Boy Brass

At my age( 70+], I tend to like the 38 special wadcutter load and 22 long rifle. Recoil is a concern with arthritis, so I like the smaller ones now. When I was a young whippersnapper, I absolutely had to have a M 57 with the full house Remington loads and at the end of firing a full box, my eyes would tear up [ wonder why] and my hand would throb for a few hours . Now, discretion is the better part of valor.

.44 Remington Magnum, by far.

I reload several calibers, but 44 MAG is by far my fav. You can load it from powder puff to nuclear.
That said, I do love 327 MAG as well. Hot 327 is pretty crazy stuff.

For rifle , I like the 30-30 most . I shoot a hard cast 173 gr gas checked well lubed bullet on top of a good charge of 3031 powder . It does all I have ever asked it to .
If just out target shooting , it's hard to say , revolvers only here . If packing it all day , then I have to go with a 357 mag in a K-frame smith . It's light , fast to draw and packs a punch on the other end . Regards, Paul

Hell, I love 'em all. But, I'd have to say that I think the .38/.357 is the most useful. That's closely followed by the .45 ACP and .44 Spl/Mag. I like the .38/.357 when carrying a lever gun with one of my revolvers in the same caliber. That's a lot of utility. Works the same for the .44 Spl/Mag.
In autos I'm like everyone else; 9mm and .45 ACP. I carry a 9mm single stack or a .38/.357 j-frame most often.

Hey guys,
Nice thread, more interesting than most caliber discussions. The pics were awesome. Seems like a lot depends on if you handload. My perception of best caliber changed when I started handloading.
One thing that leaps out at me is how many folks discuss the guns they have and not the caliber so much. I'm the same way. I have guns I love no matter what caliber they shoot.
And for us handloaders, the question is much more complex. I can make my loads into mouse farts or big boomers. The question for me might be what caliber offers more versatility than any other.
A bunch of buddies and I shot a T/C with 6 different caliber barrels, I became convinced most of us only recognize the caliber because it's marked on the barrel.
Given an unknown handgun and ammo:
What tells us that a shot was a given caliber? The sound? The recoil? The velocity? The energy delivered? The size of the hole?
I really do wonder how many people describe best caliber because of the guns they have that shoot it rather than the caliber itself.
44 special is at the top of my list for this concept. 44 special fans invariably talk about the gun that fires the caliber as the reason for their affection. They could easily shoot 44 special in a 44 magnum, but clearly choose not to do so. 44 special handguns are lighter and handier, but will not shoot 44mag. I get it. They prefer the 44 special gun over the ability to shoot 44mag.
With handloading, the overlap of all the calibers is enormous.
