trying to decide which gun to take to the range - update range report
I don't have a "large" collection by any means so I thought I would look thru my list and pick out one or two.
Going thru my list I realized that I have only shot about 30% of my guns.
And I still can't decide which other gun(s) to take. LOL

Draw numbers out of a hat, until all "shooters" are shot!

I'm thinking these two.
My 627-2 and my 60-14 Lady Smith.
The Lady Smith has never been fired since leaving the factory.
If they even still fire them at the factory.

Kenny-Pick a theme as in K-frame day, 4 inch barrel day, etc. or take a J-frame, K, and N frame .357. Shoot magnum loads and understand why you really lean towards those N-frames. Or take a kid and ask which guns they would like to shoot....

Depends on how many you want to clean. My son and our wives went out in June. Took a dozen guns. Watching my son detail clean was a joy although I did 3 to his one. When I have "guests" who have never shot (and won't be cleaning) 5 max. Gives me more control, less to monitor and clean up is quicker. Most newbs love .22 so more than one. Personally, I could go with a Ruger MKII and Model 15 with a 9mm of some flavor and it's good as can be. I'm overdue but it's still over 90 daily. Joe

That would make more sense wouldn't it?
I only have 3 K frames and I've already shot one of them and not so sure I'll shoot the 3rd one.
I have 3 J frames and this is the only one I haven't shot.
And I have about 9 N frames that I haven't shot and I'm not going to shoot a couple of them. And one L frame that I have not shot yet.
Maybe I should take my 4" 686 no dash instead of the 60-14.
Then I could compare two different 4" 357s.
Thanks for making me rethink this.

I'll be going by myself. That way no one can see what a lousy shot I am.
75% of my guns are .357s, I don't have much of a variety when it comes to calibers.
No .22 pistols. One .38 special +P. Two .45 autos. Two .41 Magnums and one .44 magnum.

Kenny-It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on a side by side comparison between the 19 and 686. They are both beautiful guns.

My first thought was a 22. Always carry a 22 to the range.
Your assignment Bro. rubiranch, is to find yourself a nice model 18 or a 617 and fill the serious deficiency in your collection.

I am neither a shooter nor a collector. I am just very fortunate to have a few what I consider very nice S&W pistols.
Of the guns that I have shot I can tell you that these two are my favorites.
I am a much better shot with my 6" M686 that my brother competed in silhouette competitions with. It has an amazing trigger and a rear Millet sight.
My 6" M66-1 is way fun to shoot too. I enjoyed shooting this one a lot.
I am looking forward to shooting both of the 4" versions, the M19-2 the most.

I always shoot one rimfire, and then one centerfire. I've found I can only shoot something in the neighborhood of 8 guns. Much past that and something sits too long.
Sure, I could take each gun out once a year and shoot a lot more but I shoot a gun better if spend more time with it. Some near-duplicates can extend it, for example there's not a lot of difference between switching back and forth between a 6" K-38 and a 6" Model 19.
Edit: OK no .22...........go with the .41 then!

I had a nice 1951 K22 Masterpiece and sold it. I never did shoot it.
I've been told several times that I need a .22 pistol. I do have a Ruger 10/22.

I haven't yet shot the majority of my guns, I have shot my M58 and enjoyed shooting it a lot too.

I rarely take more then four revolvers to the range at any given time and normally they matching calibers .38/357, .44 Spl/ Magnum. When I decide on .45 ACP it might be a couple revolvers and a couple Semi-autos. That's really all the guns I want to clean the next day.

My gun range. 100 ft.
What I took. 4" M686 & 4" M19-2.
The ammo I took.
My new targets.
I can tell you that I am either a lousy shot or these two pistols are junk. LOL
The 19-2 needs to be sighted in. I think I'm going to have a friend help me with that. The wind might have been a factor too but I doubt it.
I much prefer the 686. Way better sights for me and just seems to "feel" better.

Personally I'd move in a little closer to start with, 33 plus yards is a bit to far to start with. When I get a new revolver I normally start at about 15 yards to check the sights and really don't shoot my revolvers much past 25 yards. After 25 yards it's rifle time.

I don't know anybody who can shoot 4 perfectly spaced holes in perfectly straight lines along the edges of 2 targets. Don't be so hard on yourself. Joe

If I can hit the target, like a 8" paper plate from 100 ft 40+ times out of 50 I'm happy.
Not even close this time so I guess I'll be moving closer to try and fix the problem.
This was the first 6 rounds at 100 ft with my M58.
I have no idea where the first one went.
I'll figure out why I did soo lousy today and fix it.

And this was my first 50 rounds with my 6" M66-1.
So something's wrong.

I went to the range yesterday myself and the theme for the day was auto mayhem. I brought my SW22 Victory, my Alchemy 45 Auto 1911 and I bought my .40 BHP to try out my first reloads in .40 S&W. I only ran 20 rounds of the 40 S&W; enough to validate that it made a nice accurate load. The Victory was fun to play with at 15 yards and shot a box of 100 rounds of Win Super X, which shot accurately in that pistol. I ran 150 rounds of 230 ball I reloaded in the 1911 and as usual, the Alchemy is a lot more accurate than I am. Shooting off the bench, I could keep 3 mags in the head of a B27e target at 15 yards with no problems and no flyers. Freehand I usually have 1-2 flyers with that many mags, as the hands aren't as steady as they used to be. Old age sucks, but it beats the alternative.
Last week's trip to the range was new guns and 8 shot 357. I brought my BHP, my new to me 25-2 and my 627-5 Pro. That was a good time also. I had swapped a set of my Culina target stocks onto the 25-2 and what a difference the stock change made in the feel of the gun. The Culina stocks fit my hand so much better than the S&W targets it's not even funny.
Next time out you need to an N frame theme and see what you think of some of those unfired N frames you got, Kenny.

I can bring 4 at most, and I only own 4 - even then it is about the max I can keep track of and organized. Pretty sure before my Dad passed someone pinched an old revolver from him at the range, or he left it by mistake, no telling. All we knew is when he passed we never found it and he never sold anything.

Where did you get the picture of the 2nd crow? I’d like a first class MS. Got selected meritoriously by the last base I was on before I Retired. Turned it down because I would have to spend 5 years on a carrier.

Kenny-Most of my handgun shooting is at 15 yards or less, so I walk away feeing good about the adventure. I shoot out to 25 yards occasionally and my range has targets that will flip and dance some shoot/don’t shoot scenarios. Those are fun. Handgun combat will likely take place in under 10 yards truthfully. Outside 25 yards I’ll use a SBR or long gun. And I generally shoot without precision, worrying less about single hole hits and more about hitting multiple times without flyers. This one is 10 yard head shots trying for a smiley face but got a frown. The body shots were 15 yards. 9mm 1911. Pace of shots about one/second....

That's some good shooting.
I only have one auto that I shoot, an M&P .45 that I actually like a lot.
I do have a Colt 1911A1 that I have never shot don't plan to. I should probably sell it. I picked it up because it fits my hand really nice.
I have a couple N frames I doubt I'll shoot, one of them I'll never shoot.
I need to get the two I shot today figured out before I start shooting others. It really bug me how lousy I did today.
I do want to shoot my M627-2 and my M29-2.
The rear sight was messed up the first time I shot my 6" nickle M27-2 but I got that straightened out so when I get the two I shot today figured out those will most likely be the 3 N frames I shoot.
My friend gave me 48 rounds of his .44 Mag reloads to shoot.

I practice closer with my EDCs. I have three. Generally about 15-20 ft and I use 8" paper plates for targets.
I carry my 642-1 the vast majority of the time.
My 640-1 sometimes but not very often. It was the first gun I ever purchased.
And my M&P .45 auto in a shoulder holster when I ride my ATV.
I do need to get in some more time with my EDC revolvers.
The 100 ft is all for fun. At 25 ft, one handed, not "aiming" I had 6 for 6 body shots. Probably 1 per second with the 19-2.
Even at closer distances I am no tack driver.
