Hey Guys, looking at picking up my first older smith and while I've done a fair bit of research I was still hoping for some advice here.

The model I'm looking at is a 27-2 serial # N-102XXX which I believe was made in the early 70s during the BP era. Have heard some different opinions on this era so thats where my value comes into question.

The gun comes with presentation box but no tools and no papers. There is also a bit of ware on the grip and on the muzzle. Guy is asking 1k out the door, what do ya'll think??

Well FWIW there is a slightly older one in pristine condition wearing finger groove combats, and with the original blue two piece cardboard box, papers, tools, etc. for sale locally for $1300

In my neighborhood I would pay $700 to $800, as is. Of course, they all want $1000 for them. IMHO, it's a shooter and one of the finest assuming mechanical condition is good.

The clamshell case with the .357 is too early for the 27-2 and is worth at a minimum $250-$300. You could sell it to recover some of your cost for the gun.

A "bit of wear on the grip and on the muzzle" makes it a used gun. I declined to buy a brand new in the box with every thing the factory included 1974 5" 27-2 for $175 so the seller should be asking about $140. Tell him you learned that here.

Guess how I know it was a 1974 gun.

I suppose you could try to sell the box as Doc44 noted, but I would not go above 750 for the gun.Maybe even pass depending on recoil shield, flame cutting and other signs of use. It is not the best looking bargain I have seen

The seller is not going to lower the price to adjust for the needed new target grips, keep looking.

I think you have been given good advice. There are a lot of these out there and for 1k you should be able to get a pretty nice example that is correct and probably 99%.

A 27-2 in that kind if shape sells around here in CT for average $850-$900. There's a couple of pricier sellers around here though that would put that one out for $1000-$1200, but would never get it. They just build in negotiating room.

But, looking at the photo, you did not mention the ear plugs. What about the ear plugs? I mean, that will offset your buy-in by two or three bucks. Not to mention, wearing someone else's worn ear plugs gives off a certain charm all its own.

About 25 years ago my online dealer had the 70’s s&w m27-2 / 6” blue p & r for $795 in 99.99 % condition.at $205 more today doesn’t sound bad.

For me it’s condition, condition, condition, the price, then how bad you want it. But condition rules. I don’t mind paying “if” I’m getting the most bag for my buck. I’m not collecting nor a collector I just want the best in quality. Not investing too, my kids will get them.
