Default Serial number on model 10-7 grip, one number off!

HI,

I've owned this Model 10-7 for 20 years. Its beautiful but's it's my shooter, so I've never even looked under the groups until today. Funny enough the serial number on the grip is ---656. when the revolver itself is ---655. Weird. Can it be a factory screw up?

Thanks.

PS Sorry just realized this was put in the wrong year category.

I have heard that towards the end of stocks being numbered to the gun, especially in non-premium models (the Model 10 is the bread and butter K frame, not a Combat Magnum or Masterpiece), the stocks were put on in batches, and it would have been common for not as much care to be used in checking that they matched. I am sure your stocks are original to the gun as it left the factory if they are that close.

That said, I have a 10-8 from 1979 and I was surprised to see the stocks match the serial number.

I've got a 10-5 2" that I bought new in 1970. The SN on the right grip is likewise off by one digit. Yours is the first other one that I have seen.

Two likely scenarios...

- There’s another model 10 just like it, only with the numbers reversed.
- It’s a weak stamp and you need better light and a magnifying glass.
