Chiefs Special 36 no dash, New To Me
My position at this show is very conducive to buying, just inside the door to the big room. This Model 36 found me Saturday and the price was right. It has been very well cared for over the years. Photos don't do it justice It really is much nicer than it shows.

Looks terrific in the pictures, not sure how it could be much better in person. Nice find.

Congrats on another great find!
Looks terrific.
High 400xxx - low 500xxx serial range (that's if the inside right grip panel is stamped with the butt's serial number)?

That is a beauty!
Will you be at the show at the Farmers Market this weekend?

Is there something in the photos that tells you the gun's approximate age? I don't see anything that would tell anything more specific than the absence of a flat thumbpiece/latch.

I guessed because of the diamond grips (as I mentioned, if they number to the revolver). I have several Chiefs and a Bodyguard between '66 and '68 with the new (old, original) thumb piece and with/without diamond grips. My observations suggest S&W ran out of the round butt J-frame diamond grips long before the other styles. It's only conjecture on my part that the round butt, 2" Chiefs sold better than the other models.
Besides all that rubbish, sometimes I just get lucky with a guess!

The wood is numbered to the gun. I've got a request in to Roy for the date. It had a little dried oil on the metal under the stocks that cleaned up in a few seconds. It's really a fine specimen.

The order to replace the flat latch with your thumb piece was dated February 11, 1966.
If yours shipped in line with others of that period it left the factory within months after the change order.

That's about what I was thinking. I should have the ship date in a day or two. Will post. OR, you could see it your self. I'll still post it.

I see where you already noticed the ship date, before I did. July, 1966. That's about when I graduated from high school.
Just looked at it again. It gets better each time.
