I'm posting this in this forum since the article is S&W heavy. If the admins would prefer it in a different forum, please move it as appropriate.

I thought you all might find this article interesting, from the March 19, 1962 Sports Illustrated. It's written by Ian Fleming and talks about his correspondence with a gentleman named Geoffrey Boothroyd that provided unsolicited, but very welcome, advice on guns for the James Bond novels. It's a fascinating read. If Boothroyd had had his way completely, Bond would have carried an S&W Centennial and a S&W Model 27.

The link to the article is HERE. You can download it from my Dropbox site if you like.

I have read it before, many years ago it was posted on THR. Thank you for posting it so I could read it again.
Proper gentlemen, the both of them.
I have an airweight centennial, a model 27, a PPk, and a Beretta .25
I agree completely with Boothroyd!!!

Thanks much Borderboss :)

This article will be tonight's reading.

Love all things Bond.

What a fascinating little glimpse into the lives of two men through their correspondence. Pity that that the discipline of thoughtful letter writing that was once so commonly practiced has slowly faded away in favor of the immediacy of text messages and email.

Didn’t bond use a walther ppk?

In later films yes...but in the first one "Dr No"
it was a Beretta 418.
The switch to the PPK is made in "From Russia with Love"
When Bond is nearly killed as his suppressed Beretta 418 snags on the waistband of his trousers. He finally takes Q’s advice and exchanges the .25-caliber Beretta for the definitive PPK .

There was also a short film introduced by Sean Connery about the guns of James Bond featuring mr bothered. He stressed a belt holster was faster than a shoulder holster and used a Ruger 44 magnum on a can of tomato paste. Also lit matches using a air pistol

Thank you for sharing this article. I agree that reading the correspondence between the two men was very interesting.

There appeared to be a. Blooper in one image, if I read right the magazine IDed the one image as a Centennial when it was a Bodyguard.
The Bodyguard would be a great choice also.

In the film Dr. No, and before the character Q was introduced, the armorer was called "Major Boothroyd" by M. Undoubtedly a nod to Geoffrey Boothroyd.

A very good general reference book for everyone's library is The Handgun by Boothroyd.

Although the handgun in that scene is described as a “Walther PPK in 7.62 mm with a delivery like a brick through a plate glass window”, the gun that was used in the films was, in fact, a PP in .380.

The Roger Moore Bond carried one at one point in Live and Let Die.

Bond picked up a 3" 27 that was dropped by one of the bad guys in the Harlem alley. When he went back to the island to rescue Solitaire he carried a nickeled 6" 29.

Oh, BTW, In many of the books written by Gardner Bond carried an ASP.
