Just picked up a model 15-2 that was someone’s safe queen.this beauty is in near perfect condition! I don’t know if S&W test fires their guns before shipping but I can’t tell if this one has been fired. Can anyone give me a shipping date on this gun.

Looks like 1967 based upon the serial number but I don’t have my book with me so someone else should help verify

Welcome! Printed information about S & W ages refer to the manufacture date. The ship or sales date is only found with a letter of authenticity from the SWHF:

With popular guns the two dates are often close together.

S & W routinely test fires revolvers on every other chamber, so a NIB six-shot revolver will usually have three burn rings on the cylinder face. Enjoy!

I also have Model 15-2. It appears to be new in the Box with the tools in a sealed plastic baggie. The instruction papers are also in the box. The Cylinder also appears to have a powder residue on front of the front of every other chamber. I bought it at an Auction many years ago for $225.00. I thought it was a bargain at that price even then.

IIRC (?) the factory test fires using ever other chamber. If it passes then it is good to go. However if it has an issue the issue is addressed and then the three unused chambers are fired. In the past the chamber mouths were cleaned but this practice was dropped along the way. A new factory revolver could have all chambers' mouths stained or just every other chamber.

According to my database, your gun most likely shipped May/June time frame 1967. Nice looking piece, thanks for sharing!

The place to focus on is the recoil shield, when revolvers are fired alot their casings impact the recoil shield and after a while start to leave marks.

Your 15-2 is a fairly late production model for the dash 2 revision, it has the (then) new style non diamond Magna stocks where earlier examples had a diamond shape around the screw hole, your stocks still have the old style deep style stainless steel "escutcheons" that were phased out by the very late 1960's to early 1970's replaced with a shallow brass escutcheon during the early 15-3 production.

I've got a Smith M-67 (1976) 4", that I bought used, but in like new condition, back in 1980, for $225. I shot it a good amount, for 25 years, then shipped to S&W for a complete rebuild, in 2011. It has not been fired since. They made it like a new gun, built to 2011 specs..

Because it is rebuilt, I can not figure what it's worth. I don't have a picture, but figure it to be worth $900. BobK
