In my earlier years of shooting, I took an interest in aesthetics of firearms as well as utility. I later stopped worrying about how they look. Well, I recently picked up a beautiful old 10-5 4" and find myself wanting to get a nice pair of grips for it that will be comfortable and will look good on a light barreled gun.
I'd like to hear some recommendations, keeping in mind comfort for smallish hands and cosmetics in keeping with the model.
Thanks for any recommendations.

Personally, I like Hogues for comfort and looks. You can buy them in a wide variety of style and choice of wood as well. Some guys like Ahrends, but to me, they never look like they are quite finished, and have a lot of square looking edges. To each his own. Try as many as you can get your hands on. Literally.
Even the factory magnas look good on a m-10.

It aesthetics was my only concern, I'd stick with the Magnas on this configuration. The grips on it are absolutely perfect, but while the Magnas feel "ok" in my hand, I think I could find something more comfortable. If I'm going to buy a new pair, I might as well look for some nice wood while I'm at it...

Here's some Hogue's on a 686. They really fit my hand, and my hands are not real big.

The Hogues look great, and I imagine they'd be comfortable, but how would they look on a slim barrel Model 10-5?
I normally don't worry about cosmetics, but in this case I do. Are any of the aftermarket grip companies that were around in the 60's and 70's still in business?

Here's a model 67 K frame 38. Stainless brother to the Model 15 Combat Masterpiece. It has Magnas on it and a Tyler T grip. I have small hands and this set up works quite well on K frames for me.

My M19-3 wears a set of Hogue smooth finger groove monogrips in cocobolo (model# 10800). It is a 4" barreled, square butt gun and the grips look and feel great. The finger grooves give you something to hold onto, even though the grips are smooth. Midway USA has a huge selection of Hogue wood monogrips or you can order direct from Hogue. Just as good, if not better than S&W combat grips, at half the price.

Not a fan of Ajax - recently ordered a set of pearl-lite grips for my wife's model 15-3. Grip screw was too long, and Ajax's response was for me to grind it down myself. I didn't pay a lot of money to have to grind down a grip screw. Left side grip didn't fit very well, either. Won't be ordering from them again.

I've also settled for adding Tyler "T"s to factory stocks on my 15-3 and 10-5. They feel right and I shoot the K's better so equipped. I also like the look.

If you shop well you can get a set of S&W combats for a K frame for around $100
or factory smooth presentation for around $75
Or Kim Ahrends finger groove for $60

I like Ahrends grips, but if your gun has a really nice finish. Stag.

Many here like the Ahrends line of grips. They are nicely produced but I just haven't found a set that felt good to me. The sharp, flat edges bother my fingers and I don't think I should have to spend time dehorning or modifying a brand new set that I just shelled out good money for.
For "mass production" grips I like Hogue.
For a step up I love forum member "Kurac" coke shaped grips.
I have a set of Nill coke bottle grips on order and I expect they will be every bit as comfortable as Kurac's version.
If you want Magna type grips I encourage you to look into Keith Brown's offerings. No other magna type grips even come close.
None of the stocks I have mentioned are inexpensive, however, once you have handled the top-of-the-line products from these craftsmen you won't settle for anything less.

Thanks for all the info. There's a pair of target stocks in the classified section right now that is tempting - from the photos they look like the nicest factory pair I've seen.
However, I'd like to find something a little smaller, and now I have a lot of places to look, so thanks!

The finish on this is beautiful, and I was kind of toying with the idea of stag - are they comfortable to shoot, and are they prone to cracking?

My vote is for Hogue grips, they are practical and pretty.

This 4" Model 66-1 is wearing a set of Craig Spegel's square butt targets. They are slimmer than the planks that the factory was turning out in later years, and are very comfortable to shoot.

S&W factory combats. A tiny bit narrow for my grip but I have large hands.
I think these would look and feel great on a model 10.
